Monitor flickering

Hi guys.

I've had a pair of Samsung 226BW monitors since 2008 or 9, one of them I bought new but the other was second hand because in the two weeks between buying the first and deciding I wanted another, they completely disappeared from the internet and were replaced by two others, one more expensive and the other much cheaper. Anyway, the second hand one has started malfunctioning.

If I turn it on after it's been off for a long time, the screen is black. Then it'll start to fade in on the right hand side only, flicking at a high frequency and gradually slowing down, then the left hand side starts to fade in, the flicking slowing down continually, and then it sort of stops, tries to turn on, kind of does, flickers once more and suddenly is fully on. I think it's been doing this for about two months, when it started it wasn't that bad but it quickly degraded and now it takes two minutes from pressing the power button to the image stabilising itself.

Once it's on the image is perfect, maybe a fraction duller than my other display but nothing noticeable at all. For those of you with electronics knowledge, the rate that the flickering frequency decreases looks to me that if you plotted it on a graph it would look like a capacitor time constant graph, i.e. sharply decreasing at first and then slowing down as it progresses until it's fully charged.

I recorded a video of what it looks like but given the low frame rate of the iphone I recorded it with it doesn't look anything like it does in real life, so I won't upload it unless it would help?

Any ideas of what's causing it? I'm hoping it's the capacitors, because I think I could replace them easily enough, but if it's the cathodes then I think I'll just have to replace it. Problem is, with my OCD I'll have to replace them both, though two 24" monitors would be delightful because that same OCD has noticed that there's a considerable gap on my desk which could be filled with more monitor...

Does anyone know if the Samsung Syncmaster SA450 is any good? 24", WUXGA (1920x1200), LED backlight... It has a 5ms response time, though, which is more than twice what my current monitors have. It's on Amazon here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-inch-LED-Monitor-1000/dp/tech-data/B0050SIJIC/ref=de_a_smtd. I'd be using them for gaming, and if they can handle that then they can handle anything I'd use them for.

Thanks guys.
