More brain dead AI moments (nice work DP)

Running the 24hr Ring on b-spec. Half way through for some reason my driver runs the car through the pit window, tires are so cooked he spins at the pit entrance and misses. No fuel and cooked tires = a really really really long lap time back to the pits. So he's coming down the high-speed stretch at a blazing 50 mph, just about to make the fast left hander when one of the other cars comes flying up and slams into the back of him not once but twice! WTF?

Are the programmers at DP soooo brain dead they couldn't code it so when the AI comes upon a car going way slower that it automatically passes instead of slamming into it? :dunce:

I get knocked off the track, because my car has no tires left, and he barely gets it back under control to make into the pits.

I knew the AI was probably the worst out there, I just didn't know it was that bad. That's just beyond excusable. (Gawd I hate this game)

Let me ask you a couple of questions. And answers. They sound rude. Sorry beforehand. I'm not as mean as I sound. The last one is the only one to be taken really seriously.

If you don't like the AI, why don't you drive it yourself? Oh, 24 hours. But it has been done. Many times.

Do you have any idea how much computing power the PS2 has? Just over 300 MHz. Show me a game that can look even nearly decent and boast great AI on a 300 MHz PC. GT4 is a technical achievement considering the hardware.

Do you think you can program a better game? Go for it. Make it to the developing team.

If the game is so damn bad, why are you still playing it? We know it's flawed. We don't need to be told. We play it no matter what...

And last but not the least, what on earth is this doing in Tuning & Settings? :odd:

'Cause well, I'm addicted and we all know how that is. :scared:

And yes you're right it's in the wrong spot, I'm always in the tuning thread and I forgot to back out of it. Sorry about that.

Team? I'm telling you, there's more than just a "team" involved in the creation of a game. Many teams do seperate tasks. (Back to OP's statement) Complaining about the game or one slight fault in it won't get you anywhere. They aren't going to redo the whole thing for one small error or glitch.

(Gawd I hate this game)
The thing is, the game isn't that bad. Considering B-Spec is a literal driver that you train to get better. That in itself is an amazing accomplishment (from a programmer's perspective).

Sorry, but I must mention Live for Speed here. Created (or at least, the vast majority of it was created) by three men. Three. And releasing every single updated version, while the game is still in development, and allowing everyone to comment, suggest and criticise, means that when this game is finally finished it will not only be an incredible achievement for a group so tiny, but also damn close to perfection.
The LFS developers will 'redo the whole thing for one small error or glitch', and have done many times.

This is where PC games can have a huge advantage over console games - Alpha-version development, on public release, is by far and away the best way to make a game. Unfortunately, this is next to impossible for the PS2, so Polyphony Digital (Which abbreviates to PD, by the way) did the best they could. They didn't want people to use B-Spec more than necessary - I suspect it's only there so that the lazier among us can get the best cars to drive in A-Spec - and so it's not the best programmed AI in the world. But, as Greycap rightly points out, for the processing power at its disposal, GT4 makes incredible use of the PS2.

Not that I'm going to defend GT4's AI in other areas, such as the opposing cars...

The thing is, the AI seem to be almost completely unaware of you in A-Spec (excluding the test course where they actually try to overtake after slipstreaming you, they still brake at the corners though for some unknown reason), and it's often the same in B-Spec, even if Bob seems to have basically the same experience level the AI have no matter what you'd think they'd notice him since he being controlled by the game aswell. He can often seem unaware of them to, i hate it on the display screen when the gap between Bob and the AI in front closes right down and then goes back up again. This is often due to him hitting them. In conclusion, Bob is just the same as the AI except he can be commanded and learn how to take most corners properly.

yes the B-spec drivers are dopey at times like they will crash into the same obsticle over and over again, the funny thing is the CPU drivers. One day I wanted to test their ability in the Costa di Amalfi, so I rammed his car in the small section forcing him inti a wall. He started backing up turning and hitting the divider over and over again for two laps.

They apparantly lack the basic intellect and logic to realise that reverse gear will take you backwards more than 4 feet! This has caused many problems with B-Spec.

You're right, the AI is crap, it's been crap since GT1 and nothing points to an improvement in the future. It's just to live with. I don't think there is many hours work to make it better to be honest. PD just doesn't even seem to try. In all other racing game (as far as i know) the AI have some sort of thinking like "there is an obstacle, i should avoid it, either by turning or braking" while the GT AI thinks like "here is my racing line and this is the speed i should use".

Shortly, the GT AI is like there is only them and the Track, all other cars out there are invisible.

We'll just have to hope the AI have multiple-digit I.Q.'s in GT5.
Beerzgood
Any digit at all would be fine, thanks.
 , i hate when i am overtaking AI, and he suddenly goes into me so i can't turn, and have to crash the wall =/, you know what i mean?

There's a lot of space how to improve AI.

the real question is....

how'd you run out of gas?

uhm, well i never ran out of gas in A-Spec, but Bob once tried to look like big master so he drive one more lap on Nurb, resulting slowing down to 80kmh (i think) in middle of the course because he was out of gas >_>
