Most Memorable Crash

I think the one at the beginning of the season I think it was in Australia, Sydney where at the beginning of the race it was raining and after the first turn someones car slid out of control and the rest of the cars pile up and I think Ralf's head was hit by a tyre as it went over him.

Hmm. Sounds like you're talking about Melbourne 2002, where Ralf Schumacher hit the back of Rubens Barrichello, and went flying, thus triggering an accident that involved 9 cars.

If we're talking about startline shunts, you've got to talk about Spa 98, which involved some 17 cars, and was a whole different ball game.

Villeneuve destroying endless BARs at Spa was quite amusing, especially since he walked away from them all.

For sheer amazement, you should go back much further, to Monza in 1993, I think. Christian Fittipaldi, in a Tyrrell, was slipstreaming someone out of the final turn of the final lap. He hit the back of their car and was thrown into a cartwheel. He crossed the line off the ground, upside-down, facing the wrong way.

Giles - it was a Minardi, and he was slipstreaming the other Minardi! Who are you, and what have you done with the real GilesGuthrie?!?

There's a video of it here - amazing stuff.

For mine - Patrese in the Williams at Portugal in '92. He was drafting Berger who was heading into the pits. Patrese clipped the back of Berger's McLaren and speared skywards - it could have quite easily headed into pitlane. Nasty. Video here .

Grr. I should have known that!

Most memorable crash... well, I guess the 2001 German Grand Prix at Hockenheim circuit. Luciano Burti of Prost crashed into the back of Michael Schumacher's Ferrari at the start of the GP. I have a cut out from my local paper (I kept it for 3 years, 30th July 2001!) It's a sequence shot of the accident.

Both drivers escaped unhurt, and restarted the race in their spare cars but dropped out midway through.

That was a pretty mad one. I also remember (on the subject of inverted cars) Pedro Diniz burying his roll hoop in the soft grass of the Nurburgring a while ago. That was quite mad...
