Movie clips on X360

I don't know which format the X360 acknowledges in order to run movie clips.

I copied a few clips from my PC, hooked up the USB to my console, and none of them would run. They're flash videos, and I converted them to WMV, MOV, and MP4 formats.

I can't seem to run them, and keep getting a message "an update is required in order to play this content" or "content not supported".. something like that.

What's going on? Isn't the X360 able to playback WMV and MP4 formats?

I can't do any software upgrades, since I don't do XLive.

That's pretty much it. There was an update a while ago that gave the 360 the ability to run most of the files you mentioned, but w/o XBL access (including XBL silver... the free service) you can't update and get it.

I wonder if you can find a down load to CD that you can update your system with at Xbox.com. I would look but I need to enter my MS Windows password to get to the site, and I don't have my password on me. I know you were able to burn the WRW's driver to a CD, and the Hard Drive transfer's driver was available there as well, but I am not sure that system updates are there. It's worth looking if they are. Search for "System Updates" once you are there.

You could get Live for 48 hours, update your xbox and all your games, and you are ready to go :D ( here it's €3,- )

Carlos, it's my internet connection, it is a bit crap. And I'd rather not pay for it.

I don't think any kind of updates available on the Live server are available for download otherwise.

I guess I'm stuck with not being able to play clips for now. But the tip mentioned before Carlos' feedback sure sounds helpful. I'll look into that.

Do you have a friend who has XBL? Maybe you could bring your box to him or her and let them log on.
