I have a question. I am trying to take off all my software and files from my PC to CD and DVD media in order to re-install windows XP to start fresh. But my DVD burner for some reason is not working. This is a message I get when I go to Windows' Device Manager...

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

so I really dont know what to do. Well we got a laptop..one that came with a DVD burner and I had this thought, why not transfer my files from the PC to the laptop and burn them onto a dvd, which is better because I just ran out of CD-R's..but i got tons of DVDR's...so I connected a usb cable to the USB ports on both the laptop and the PC...but nothing. So basically my question is this, how do I transfer them over?? or do I need an ethernet cable???? please help.

I don't know if I can be of help with your DVD burner problem, but to answer your question about file transfer...

Yes, you'll need a network cable. Unless they are already in the same network, then just enable file sharing between the two computers.

I got a network cable ready, but now this...

Do I connect the network cable direct "PC to LAPTOP" or "PC to Router to LAPTOP"??? Which works better and faster??

Depends if you're going to connect them through a router or not obviously. Both should work equally well, at more or less the same speed.

You cannot move software across though. Installed programs change the registry on the machine, not just install files. Things like Firefox, Office, all games, etc will have to be reinstalled.

Yea I've got most of my install files for my programs on a CD already, but Im just trying to move over MP3's and Mpeg's to burn on a DVDR, because I got a few Mpegs that are in the GIGABIT size and wont fit on a CDR and I really dont know how to split an mpeg file to 700mb or less...unless anyone here knows how. ;):nervous:

I'm sure you can use winzip, or any other compression program, to zip a file and tell it to span over more than 1 CDR. You won't get much compression, but the file can be transferred over 2, or more, CDRs using that method.

*sigh* WinZip does have a website, full of information, you know. ;)

Anyways, you can try WinZip free for 45 days, then you will be asked to register your copy after the evaluation period is over (although technically, you can continue using it).

I use 7-Zip. It's free software distributed under the GNU Lesser General Public License.

Well thanks for the info, and sorry for making you sigh..anywho i downloaded the program and it works great! those 2gig files are now in 3 CDRs and all under 10 minutes. Almost done taking all my files off. As far as the programs go, I'll just re-install them. So thanks all of you for the great help!....:)
