Mr2 '86 Turbo or Supercharged?

I've just recently tuned both the MR2 1600 G '86 and the MR2 G Limited '86, and I have to say they are both great cars. The handle quite well and are fairly quick. In terms of lap times the two are in a dead heat, having lap times that are separated by just one hundredth of a second.

My question is this, which on do you prefer? My Supercharged is a little more stable, but can't effectively use all 9000 rev's available to it, as it's power peaks at 6100RPM. The 1600 G on the other hand can break it's back end loose on some corners, but uses it's rev's much better, peak power coming on a 7400RPM. Please post your opinions and thoughts, this is a matter of curiosity and fun so have at it.

I use both regularly online for 450pp racing but lately I have been favoring the N/A with a stage 3 turbo. It gets peak hp and torque at high rpm making it suitable for driving automatic. You need to fine tune the transmission for every race though so you hit redline at the end of the longest straight.

The Supercharger edition I MUST run in manual mode because it falls short on power well before redline. I typically install all the mods then use power reduction to flatten the hp curve between 5,000-7,000 rpm. Then i set the transmission to a very high top speed so that I have long enough gear ratios to cruise in that rpm range. Keeping the revs low reduces the chances of breaking the rear end loose. Less shifting helps too unless you need a downshift to rotate the car.

With these two setups, i can run similar times on Trial Mountain (one of my favorite tuning tracks because of the rough roads). The Turbo feels faster running it to redline but lazy shifting the supercharger keeps up the pace.

However, the '97 MR2 or the '99 MR-S (MR2 Spyder) can run circles around both of the '86 models. It is noticeably 1-2 seconds faster at Trial Mountain where i typically run hot laps to fine tune suspension settings.

Here I am trying to take on a '97 online. He just pulled away every time we got to the straight and the draft wasn't helping me at all.

Here I am in a '99 MR-S. I didn't get a qualifying lap in so i started at the back. I was gaining on the leaders several seconds per lap. I would have caught them on the next lap but they both wiped out.

Here I am in my '86 N/A with a stage 3 turbo trying to keep pace at Suzaka East. I simply couldn't close the gap with some of the other cars mostly because they had more power on the straight and the Merc was holding me back through the twisties.

Good races the other day chuyler1 (I was using the MKI). I went into that first turn a little wild and gained way too much air. I wanted to quickly recover and at least retake second place, but while flying around I crashed and got a penalty!

But to answer the OP's question, I prefer the supercharged edition. I'm more familiar with its overall handling and feel. I'll be taking the turbo edition around sometime soon to really give a good comparison to which I like the most. For both of the '86 MR2's though, it takes a lot of work not to fall behind from the competition. This challenge is fun to take on though.

Thanks for the response guys. I just thought it was weird how too cars that are nearly the same, could handle so differently. I'm definitely going to have to try the power limiter on the Supercharged M2, thats not some thing I have ever really thought of.

I've been discussing the two cars in another thread and thought i'd share this image. I was explaining now the power bands are different for the two cars and if you want to run equivalent times with the SC you will have to shift much earlier. You'll have to tweak the gearing as well so you can run at lower rpm all the way to your top speed for a given track.
