It all started last summer when I was in the Philippines, and while bored on a car trip, I started drawing up different ideas for an external shifter mod inspired by Nurburgring's first shifter rig. The one on the side of the DFP is kind of cheap feeling, and the gate travel is well... nonexistant. So I decided to design and build a rig that looked good, as well as felt good. I have hardly any experience with electronic wiring and programming, so the plan was to build a sequential shifter using a simple controller mod, and some microswitches.
So fast forward to 6 months later. The rig was built in a weekend, yet the eletronics proved to be much of a problem. After much trial and error with the electronics, I finally ditched trying to make the solderless A-series hack mod work, and came across an old PSX 1 controller without the analog, that was perfect for wiring up to the L1 and R1 buttons.
So I threw that onto the rig, cut up a large shoebox, and I have my completed shifter rig. It could use a bit more weight, but for the most part it feels authentic enough, and looks nice. It only cost me about 30 dollars in materials, yet around 60 dollars in the entire trial and error process.
An additional perk to not attaching it to my cockpit, is that I can move it from the left side to the right depending on the car I use.
