My first impressions of Shift online...

After spending a few of hours racing Shift online for the first time (my PS3 had been having internet issues), I found that, like everything else with this game, it left me with decidedly mixed feelings.

First of all… does everybody drive the Zonda R?!! In spite of its’ fabulous performance (or because of it) I’m already sick of this car. I guess it’s the biggest stick so everybody picks it… Where I could choose, I found myself picking the Carrera GT or the Works Vette instead just to be different. Of course that meant losing a lot but, 🤬 em.

One thing I definitely didn’t like was that although you could request a certain car rating, say 10.0. I never once got put into a lobby that was anything but unrestricted. Yeah, I know I could’ve hosted my own race, but I never know when I’m going to get called away from the game so I don’t like hosting.

On the other hand I ran a really fun 30 minute Time Attack on the Nordschleife in the Works Vette (against two Zondas of course), and while I didn’t win, my best time (6:39) was only 5 seconds off the winning time so I felt pretty good. It makes a huge difference in the enjoyment when you race with people who don’t punt you off the track at every opportunity. :)

I’m still getting a feel for Shift online, but I can see great potential there… 👍

It depends on what time you race. Sometimes I go on & there will be nothing but drift events. I hardly ever find folks who use the Zonda R.

Agree :ill:

I prefer manufactory cars online and private lobbies.

Yup, apparently I'm going to have to host the races that I want to be in.

The problem of course, with manufacturers races is that you can't Tune them, which wouldn't be a big problem except for the Bump-Jumping issue.

I'm mostly enjoying the racing on line when I can get a bit of time. 👍

I don't really have an interest in the 'unrestricted', so usually end up hosting , either a 6 or 10 around the Nordschleife, and never seem to wait too long for a race.

Of course, with unmatched there is a wide variety of drivers online and its a hoot watching noobs trying to wall ride all the way around the Nordschleife. Actually its amazing how far they can get doing that. However have also ended up in some really good races as well, plus on occasion having my butt well and truely kicked.

But the main thing that really grates me about racing online is that you can do one race and the car is exactly how you've tuned it. Then without touching anything, in the next race with someone else the car can handle totally different. And when you are really trying to push it in a Porche, to suddenly find yourself in a car with totally different settings is not fun.

I'd love to know what causes that. I assume to some degree it is dictated by the settings of the person you are racing against, but I don't understand the mechanism. This can happen with just one on one racing, so I doubt its down to the amount of resources the game is allocating to how your car is tuned.

Do you guys doing Manufacturer races notice any discrepencies in the way cars handle between races, or is it purely just a tuning thing ?

Ah well, bring on the patch release, and here's hoping this gets addressed.

This just happened to me! An unlimited race with 8 players on the Royal Mile track. My Works Vette which handles beautifully suddenly has no grip at all!! :banghead:

I read on a forum somewhere that a large number (more than 6) of the highest power cars somehow overpower the processor and basically dilute the grip. I have no idea if that's true, but there is definately something screwed up somewhere.

As if I needed one, that's another reason to avoid unlimited races.
