The avatar size limit is 26 KB, so you shouldn't have any problems. Are you getting an error message?

i have a question though...

how can i remove the beveling on my avatar in Fireworks 4?

it seems to bevel on the right site of my avatar...clearly, the black border is thicker than 1 pixel..

Well, make sure you're editing the PNG version, select the text, and then click on the "Effects" tab in the small "Effect" window. Obviously, all of the effects you have applied to the text will be displayed there, where you can then edit them accordingly.
