As some of you may already know, a few weeks ago I bought a refurbished* laptop form Dell. A co-worker of mine had also, and he got his first. It was an Inspiron 1100, pretty low grade model, but what he wanted. It was brand new, never used, and came with a new computer warranty. What a great deal. So after eagerly awaiting mine I was disappointed to see that it was not brand new. In fact it was over a year old, and fairly well used. The first time I turned it on it froze up, and continued to do so for a week no matter what I tried. Finally I told Dell I was sick of trouble shooting and wanted it replaced. They conceded.

Well today my new laptop arrived and it is, indeed, brand new. Not only that it is better than the other one, their top of the line model. The specs:

15.4" monitor
30g HD
512mb ram
64mb graphics card
2.0ghz pentium 4

It is also much thinner and lighter and, I must say, pretty. I'm so happy. I can't wait to get home and fire it up. :)

*Refurbished, in most cases, means it was refused at delivery, or that FedEx couldn't find the delivery location and sent it back. Once this happens they can't sell it as new.

Yeah yeah yeah. I'd have a Mac, believe me, if I could afford the one I want. The difference between them isn't so huge as to warrant a bare bones system, though.

Good buy Mile! Dell might not make the best desktop PC's but they do make good laptops, I'll admit. Hope you have fun with it. 👍

damn now i really need a jorb, so i can get myself a laptop, damn you for making this tread, now it makes feel even poorer

I wouldn't mind getting this

Mind you, it only has WinXP Home, ATI Radeon 9000(?) 32MB, and its wireless card only supports 802.11b/g, here's what Dell offers me:

24X CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive
512MB,333MHz,2 DIMMs
No Floppy Drive
40GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive
32MB ATi MOBILITY™ RADEON™ 9000
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home
WordPerfect® Productivity Pack with Quicken New User Edition
Dell SecurityCenter by McAfee, 90-day introductory offer
RealOne™ Player, with 14 day SuperPass trial
Dell TrueMobile™ 1300 WLAN (802.11b/g, 54Mbps) Mini-PCI card

1 Year Limited Warranty plus 1 Year Mail-In Service
==================
$1,667.00

Mind you, the main things that cut prices was the warrenty that I cut down. Otherwise there were promotional memory and hard drive offers, and I skimmed down the software because we have a bunch already(My brother picked up a copy of WinXP Professional at some meeting, promotional offer), and rather than spending big $$ on Office, I could go with OpenOffice, or spend a little and get StarOffice. But hey, for the price, it isn't bad... Maybe I can persuade my dad into either letting me get that or an Apple, but since we don't have Apple software(save for the AppleIIe...) he wouldn't want me to get an Apple....
