So my PS3 is pretty much done for. There are 8 Games It plays, 4 of them PS3 games.

Gran Turismo 5, Grand Theft Auto V, Mafia II, Call Of Duty 4, Need For Speed Carbon, Need For Speed Underground 2, 007 Nightfire, Gran Turismo 3 and Gran Turismo 4 are all that work on it. Tried everything including cleaning out all the dust on my PS3 and doing a complete factory reset. Just gonna have to be stuck with what games I've got til I get my PS4.

Your PS3 is censored.... go to Settings > Security Settings > Parental Control > Set Level

But seriously this sounds laser related, I'm assuming you have a backwards compatible 60GB PS3. The 60GB had a stupidly complicated laser assembly to allow it to play PS2 and PS3 games using one laser. All later units had two separate lasers.

You can check if it's the laser by opening it up, running the disk drive with the metal cover off and ONLY using a camera, film to see if the laser lights up when it trying to read different disks. If it doesn't light up there's your problem.

I'll try that when I get home. It has the spinning clock thing in the top right to show its loading but then it stops and sometimes the disc shows on the XMB, sometimes it doesn't. Usually playing a working game for an hour or to gets a non working game to work

Through the clear middle part of the game disk (if you remove the 'white plastic drive with magnet top thing') the camera should be able to pick up the laser lighting up a purple / blue colour...

If it it's lighting up dim, only for a short time or not at all then it might be the reason. It might just be that the laser eye needs a clean with a cue tip and some alcohol. Good luck.

Sadly I know which drive you need.

I might also get a new wireless card for it as my wireless internet has been playing up for a whole week. Tried to update GT5 5 times now and it cuts out at 30% because it loses the access point

You could also buy just the laser, relatively easy to replace.

Much easier if you are not that confident with opening up the drive as you just disconnect the cables, and remove the PCB and reinstall on new drives

Yeah the 60GB is quite heavy on the screws and small cables, you have to be careful. Even taking the lid off you have to watch out not to sever a cable stuck to the top not to mention the super thin disk sensor cable when opening the disk drive.

I'm pretty certain it is the laser as its on the latest firmware, it is clean of any dust and has hardly any data on it. Oddly, when a game is running the PS3 is totally fine, when if it had trouble loading a game, surely it would have problems running it, but no its fine once the game is running. Apart from GT6

Sounds like it might be having trouble deciding what the disk is but once it's focused correctly it will play from that point without a problem until the next disk when it has to check again.

This may be caused by a part in the laser called the 'Zoom Lens Collimator' which is a magnifying glass on a track, it allows one laser to read 5 different disks types at different wavelengths.

This part is overcomplicated and fails easily, if it does it cannot be replaced individually so the whole laser has to go. I think Sony thought it was designing the Hubble Telescope!
