I just got my SCCA membership, my card should be in the mail soon, and now... oh, crap. I don't know what to do now. I don't know what to do with contingencies, I don't know how to sign up for races or what to sign up for, and I certainly don't know what class of racing I should enter.

so, basically, HALP!

May I point out that this is probably not an ideal place to ask. SCCA has its own official website with its own forum. By the looks of it, it is a very active forum with a lot of helpful advice. And many of the members there probably take part in events. So its a better place to ask.

Edit: Here's the link to the forum http://www.sccabb.com/

On another note, I wish you the best of luck with your racing! :) 👍

+1 on the "you posted this in the wrong website."

Where are you located? What's your budget? What track do you live closest to? Do you already have the propper race gear? Do you have a trailer and tow vehicle or will you need to drive your car to the track? What cars do you like (Hondas, Mazdas, Neons, Corvettes, Spec Racer Fords, Open Wheel? Will you work on your own car or have to hire it out?

I started in a Honda Civic. Bought it for $2,500 and put another $2,000 into it to make it competitive. Awesome car to start with. Easy to drive, reliable and forgiving when you make a mistake. I ran in ITC - Improved Touring C. Check out the classified section at Improved Touring dot com. http://www.improvedtouring.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=64

I then moved to Spec Miata. Largest class in the country. Always someone to race with and lots of information sharing on set ups, how to, etc. Great community to tap into. Also many race shops building cars. You can buy a solid car from one of the 6 or 7 race shops or get into one of their rental programs - arrive and drive. Depends on your budget and mechanical abilities. I built my own, using a build guide from Advanced Autosports. Classifieds here. http://mazdaracers.com/index.php?app=classifieds

Spec Neon is also a popular class in some areas of the country. Cheap, tight rules. Some people even drive these to the track (Miatas too). http://www.specneon.com/

Good luck and welcome to the club.

Oh, by the way, I love that you are this green and mentioned contingencies. It will be a while before you win your first race. There is a ton of talent in the amateur ranks.

Do you have your competition licence or just your membership? You'll need to pass a racing school and get a novice permit. Then earn your regional racing licence, then national racing licence, then pro if you plan to take things that far. Contingencies really kick in around the national level.

I'm already a member over there, and it's pretty much dead. I'm TL Type S over there.

I think I might just go with the national license, seeing as I'm just into club racing. also, I posted a thread over there, and it takes weeks for a reply, whereas here takes about... what, 5 minutes?
