Old Boone
Hello everyone. I've been lurking GT Planet for the past couple of years but only recently created an account. I try to make it to as many races as possible at Sebring. I also visit Daytona a few times a year along with annual trips to the Petit Le Mans and St. Pete Grand Prix. I was fortunate enough to travel to Road America this year for the ALMS race. Right now I'm shooting on a Nikon D40 with a 70-300mm VR lens. A couple of the shots from Petit Le Mans below were taken with my friend's Nikon D5000 and a rented 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. I'm hoping to upgrade my camera and lens before the 2011 Rolex 24.

Here are some of my favorite shots I've taken since the beginning of 2010. More posted on my flickr - http://www.flickr.com/photos/old_boone/

I'd be happy to all any of those shots mine, even if they were taken with a Nikon. :P

Just kidding on the Nikon bit, Old Boone. Definitely not kidding about the quality of the shots!

Oh wow! It's you! Big fan of your work, (I'm Adam Pigott Photography on Flickr) love the first shot and the Porsche RS Spyder ones too. Although you've got some right gems across your whole photostream. 👍

Welcome to GTP, glad you finally decided to start getting a little more involved with the community. Some really nice shots, you've got a great eye for it. 👍

McLaren - Glad you like it! That car is one of my favorites to shoot at the track. There's another shot of the BMW I took from this same corner that's slightly sharper and doesn't have the flash in the background if you're interested - http://www.flickr.com/photos/old_boone/4545086876/

Speedster502 - Thanks, man! Good to see some other people from flickr here (and I've seen a few familiar names from the Forza photography board as well). Love those recent studio / light-painting shots of the GT-R you posted.

LongbowX - Thanks! There is some real talent posting on this board. Looking forward to seeing how the 2011 calendar turns out.

GPR & Syntax error - Much appreciated, guys. I'll definitely be posting now that the game is (almost) here.

A-HA!!! I knew some of these looked familiar!! I've also got you as a contact on Flickr (I'm Bodecito over there), did so right away after I saw your bad-ass gallery, welcome to GTPlanet, man!!!

And, what can I say? I mean, mother of God. Good doesn't begin to describe all of this. Your race track work is some of the best I have ever ever seen, it's absolutely freaking FAST. I really like the rothmans Cayman and the Telmex car with the wheel of rfortune in the background, but really, your whole gallery is to drool for.

BloodyPenguin - Thanks! The 70-300mm lens was one of the best purchases I've made. The D40 is great but I'm getting to the point where it's limiting a fair amount of my shots.

Cano - How's it going, man? Good to see some more familiar names posting here. And thanks for the compliments.

I'll be back at Sebring next week for some historics racing (Bobby Rahal's Legends of Motorsports series). Can't wait because there will be four Porsche 962s racing there...those cars sound fantastic.

Here are some other of my favorites from this year:

crap. the First Porsche with the shoe off the ground and, again, the Telmex car in the night are impressive. The JOY BMW is also awesome. Heck, all of them are but those really stand out a lot.

I'll be looking forward to yout historic car pictures, if there is something I love is old cars racing.

The side profile shots are just money. These are easily up there, if not, surpassing some of the official photos ALMS/Rolex/etc. post on their official websites. 👍👍

Edit* You said you're using a Nikon D40 as your main camera. What settings, if I may ask, are you using for these shots? I've only had 1 successful attempt at shots like these, but nowhere near this level. I know the lens must be playing a big part as well.

Cano - Thanks again, man. I'm really looking forward to this race now that I've looked at the preliminary entry list (pdf). This will probably be the most expensive historics race I've been to and there are supposed to be some awesome cars there (Ferrari F40 GTE, Aston Martin DBR9, McLaren F1 GTR, BMW & Audi LMPs, some Can-Am and open wheelers). I'll post some shots here next week.

McLaren - I usually start with shutter priority mode at 1/80sec at ISO200 to find out what the camera is metering but tend to keep it on full manual as my camera's meter tends to overexpose in shutter priority. For the shots where the cars are moving towards me I usually leave it on auto-focus (AF-C, center-weighted, single shot). The side profile panning shots I switch it to manual and focus on the section of the track where the car will be passing by. The last shot of the Peugeot and Audi was taken with my friend's D5000 and a rented 70-200mm f/2.8 lens on aperture priority focused manually. That's the lens I'm saving up for...it's incredible.

If you're interested in finding the settings for any particular shot above (or in my photostream on flickr) just click on the image and view the EXIF info under the Actions drop down menu.

ooohhh grab some Can Am stuff please... and if there are any muscle cars racing, pleeease (:

Here are a few shots from today at the Legends of Motorsports. Saw the McLaren F1 GTR and Ferrari F40 GTE there but neither of them ran...crossing my fingers they will tomorrow since I'll be heading back to Sebring for the main races.

HOLLY *** that last Porsche is absolutely epic. Amazing amazing picture, bud.The Martini and Jaguar are also awesome.

Man, I wish there was stuff like that over here.

Thanks, man. That was actually a pretty easy shot to take. That Porsche was blowing fire for about a quarter of a mile leading up to turn 7....it was just a matter of getting the panning correct more than timing.

I wasn't able to catch too many Can-Am cars (unfortunately none were running that had those trademark huge wings). I'll try to upload some of the ones I was able to catch later this week though. I've got some more shots I've worked on uploaded to flickr and will post more later this week when I have more time to edit.

You sir got amazing panning skills. I had a D40 before and i never thought its' ISO range at f/5.6 was usable at night, but you proved me wrong

 to you

Dougboy - Thanks, man. Yeah, the D40 doesn't like high ISOs at all...it's difficult to get decent results but it's possible. Most of the shots are throw aways...that's one of the reasons I'm looking forward to upgrading to the D7000 and a fast lens like the 70-200 f/2.8.

Here are a couple more from last weekend. That was the last shoot I'll be doing for 2010. Next year should be pretty awesome though with all of the new cars debuting in ALMS.

Thanks, GARRYOWEN! It was definitely my favorite race this year. Watching the GT2 class battle it out was the highlight of the season for me.

Your side pans are superb! So crisp. The F360 and the old Ferrari shot stand out to me the most, especially the old Ferrari really lovely tones across the image and the PP works really well on the image. So I'm guessing Road Atlanta is your local circuit then?

Also are you actually Media? Or just someone who is in desperate need of getting a Media pass?

Thanks again, man. Sebring is my local track which is about 2 hours from my house. St. Petersburg (Florida) is actually the closest circuit to me but they only have one street course event per year. I'm a little over 2 hours from Daytona, 6 hours from Miami/Homestead and 7 hours from Road Atlanta. I'm not considered media yet since I've never had credentials nor do I get paid for any of my work. But I've had my pictures published on certain racing websites (l'endurance, Endurance Magazine, RaceRevo, The Checkered Flag and on Endless Brakes' website) and in one print magazine based in Portugal. I'm also lucky enough to know some people in the racing industry.

I'm still relatively new to photography only picking it up about 2 years ago but it's such a fun hobby that I don't mind not getting paid for it. Although it would be nice to be able to afford some better camera equipment...
