this mod keeps warning me, i dont understand, ive been posting for a bit here, and no one complains about not being able to read my posts. im a maths student, so i dont have AMAZING grammer and punctuation skills everyone else here has, and i dont think you need to have perfect english, this is a forum, not an english exam.

infact i never ever had a problem with my spelling and stuff ever on any forum, this is the only one thats making a fuss. i dont have the time to annotate and edit and scrutonize my writing to such deep extents, this is a forum, a social chat type thing.

racing is a worldwide event, some people have english as 2nd or 3rd language, you cant expect everyone to experts.

Mods do it so we don't have arguments in the forum like this thread. Get a spell checker and capitalise you sentences and "i"s and away you go.

I'm only a maths student so it's no excuse.

It's not about writing an "exam". It has more to do with the fact that by joining the forums, you accepted the AUP which clearly states:

No slang words that promote laziness, ie; “r”, “u”, “plz”, etc. will be tolerated. Decent grammar is expected, including proper usage of capital letters. Repeated violations will be grounds for suspension and/or permanent removal from the forums. All messages must be posted in English.

And if you look at your current message, you have absolutely no capital letters at all. It's a shame really!
What surprises me is that you're from London. Out of all places, you'd expect people living in the UK to type properly.

You haven't been asked for either perfect spelling or grammar (if fact your spelling is not an issue), you have simply been reminded that you agreed to follow the AUP when you joined. Part of which covers the use of good basic grammar, which includes the use of capital letters at the start of sentences and for proper nouns.

You mention members who have English as a second language, and it is a very valid point. Part of the reason why this section of the AUP exists is for them. Seeing posts that do not follow the basic rules of English grammar can be incredibly confusing if its not you main language.

You are not the first member to raise this as an issue (it's without a doubt the main issue the staff deal with), however it is not an area that is going to change, and to be honest starting a sentence with a capital letter (which is exact what you are being asked to do) is not a major thing to ask.

Keep in mind it is exactly what we ask of every member here, so exceptions will not be made in this area.

Good spelling and grammar help the site remain easy to understand for those who do not speak English as a first language, but it also keeps us 'above' the inane 'text' filled dross that most sites quickly fall into.

You have simply been reminded about the AUP at this stage, but its only fair to point out that any future AUP issues will be dealt with more firmly.

The AUP is not an area for debate, it has served us well over the years and is part of the reason why GT Planet is the forum it is.

That's just the reason why correct grammar is expected. While a native English speaker may be able to decipher just about anything written in less than perfect English a foreigner may, or more like will, not. The point of forums is that people can communicate with each other, preferably without misunderstandings, and having a common language with as perfect grammar as possible so that everybody understands it is one of the requirements for the system to work. Putting things in perspective it's (theoretically at least) as hard for you to understand non-textbook Finnish as it's for me to understand non-textbook English. So let's play on a level field and write as well as we can, it makes life easier for all.

EDIT - Too little, too late...

Avi: Speak English to me, don-sf. I thought that country spawned the 🤬 language, and so far nobody seems to speak it.

You know how to use commas, full stops, and use a keyboard. If you used capital letters, not just to emphasize 'AMAZING', your posts would automatically be better.

i should be I
dont should be don't
that should be that's

It is a rule we all follow. I'm not expert at grammer or spelling but it doesn't take a lot of effort to read over what your typing.

Also, is this really the best part of the forum for this thread?

Not sure what this is doing in this section but I feel I need to reply. I'm mildly dyslexic thus my spelling can be a bit haphazard, but all that is asked is that the basics of gramar are employed. This is a huge forum with a large proportion of members not speaking english as there first language, for them trying to read poor english would be a complete nightmare! Thus it's asked that people post in as clear a fasion as they can.
I need to re-read my own posts a few times to actualy see some of the mistakes I've made so I can correct them, but thats no big issue. Theres a reason for it and it's not people trying to be derogitory towards your gramar, it's so everyone can easily understand your posts. Write something in danish, german, sweedish or nord and I'll understand it.....write it porely in those languages and I might as well be trying to read martian!
Like people have said the gramar rule is there for a valid reason, and not to personaly attack you.

I'm really glad the mods are tight about grammar and spelling. It makes me cringe when I see English people that don't even put the slightest effort into their posts. If people can't be bothered to make an effort then I can't be bothered to read their drivel.

If something is worth saying then surely it is worth saying it properly.

I can't believe this thread is happening. Give the guy a break. He's doing his best to contribute to the forums - and he's not sayings things like "how r u 2day", etc.

Obviously good grammar is important on a forum like this, but if English isn't a person's first language and they are trying to contribute to the forums in a positive way there should be no fuss - in my honest opinion.

English is my second language. I'm from Argentina. Even I use correct punctuation. It's not hard to do it. He is from the UK, so I highly doubt English is not his first language. Granted, there are exceptions, but this doesn't seem to be the case of a person spelling incorrectly simply because he can't do it right, but rather the case of a person spelling incorrectly simply because he is lazy.

While I agree it's not the end of the world, honestly if he just used proper capitalization, his posts would be much improved.

Every time there is a situation like this, it comes down to one of two things:

Can't do or won't do

In your case don-sf I suspect you are part of the latter, what makes you so special that you should be exempt from the AUP which you did agree to abide by when you signed up to GtPlanet?

Take heed of the moderators advice don-sf, or your time here will be shorter than you would like it to be. :indiff:

Seriously guys, I don't think any more needs to be said on this topic. I just feel that encouraging him to try improve would be better than lots of negativity and giving him the impression that his posts aren't welcome here because of a few mistakes of grammar.

I've seen a couple of the posts that the OP mentioned and it wasn't clear to me exactly what was being complained about. It seems likely to me that he didn't realise what he was doing wrong as that particular mod. didn't (on the occasions I saw) actually point out how he was breaking the forum rules. Is the polite pointing out of the actual problem too much to ask for?

I don't think anyones saying that Dessy, just rather people are a little bemused at this post being made in this section and most are either pointing out the AUP and the reason why it's nesercery. I'm personaly suprised he hasn't been taunted more! If it was any other forum than GTP then pitchforks would be drawn by now ;)

Maybe all these posts will make it obvious how lazy he is being by not putting any effort into his posts.

He started a thread thinking he was being hard done by, everyone who has chosen to reply with constructive criticism is backing up the mods.

As to being unwelcome? Nobody has really pointed to his lack of using search, starting threads in the wrong part of the forum and could have also pointed out how many mistakes he continued to make since being kindly nudged by a mod just doing his job.

The one line in the OP which sums it up ....

"i dont have the time to annotate and edit and scrutonize my writing"

this mod keeps warning me

You've been warned once.

i dont understand, ive been posting for a bit here, and no one complains about not being able to read my posts

Except that mod, obviously.

im a maths student, so i dont have AMAZING grammer and punctuation skills everyone else here has

You're typing this on a computer. Computers can check that for you.

and i dont think you need to have perfect english, this is a forum, not an english exam.

What you think is irrelevant. You agreed to abide by the AUP set out by the owner of the site when you signed up - if you don't agree with it, why agree to it?

infact i never ever had a problem with my spelling and stuff ever on any forum, this is the only one thats making a fuss.

You're the one making a fuss. You were warned about your spelling and you chose to accuse the moderator of racism and then made this thread complaining of why you don't think the rules should apply to you.

i dont have the time to annotate and edit and scrutonize my writing to such deep extents

Make time. The world won't end if you don't hit "Submit Reply" in 4 seconds or less. You are not granted exemption because you are lazy.

racing is a worldwide event, some people have english as 2nd or 3rd language, you cant expect everyone to experts.

We expect everyone to try their best and we allow some leeway for those who are operating in a language that is not their first.
