Nürburgring map

Hi guys

A while ago me and a couple of my mates decided to have our own mini league for racing road cars round the ring - not so much for competition - but in the pursuit of perfection.. anyway, the rest of the site is doesn't really exist anymore, but I am posting a link to the map I made of the ring.. it's quite useful for beginners, as it has screenshots aswell to help you learn the corner names (useful for 'down the pub' style chat)

Any comments are welcome, I am up for resurecting this project in some fashion.

PS be patient - there are about 100 little pictures on it and it can take a while to load

Don't know if it's any use to you, but a while ago I made a Nurburgring map with Google Earth - see http://theinept.co.uk/images/nurb5.jpg - if you want to use it with your map (nice work btw 👍 ), feel free. I noticed that we differ on some corner names, but I can do a non-annotated version if you'd like.

Might just be me, but I find satellite images easier to relate to than plain maps.

Oh - and I'm working on a similar map that includes both the old Sudschleife and the current GP circuit. I pray that PD include the Sudschleife in GT5.....

For this to go anywhere, it has GOT to be hosted by somebody with bandwidth. Maybe the pictures aren't all that useful. Personally, I didn't have the patience for it, and what I saw wasn't as useful as other resources on the ring I've already seen. Maybe it's better in the UK, for someone closer to the host. With all the "patience" warnings, though, I doubt it.

It looks more like a way to show GT4 and TT pics than a way to learn the 'ring. In other words, "Here's a picture of my bike in a turn, and here on the track map is where the turn is located," rather than "Here's a section of track and what you need to know about it."

The mechanics of the site, once it's loaded, are pretty cool, and maybe it's a good way for a player to relate his screen images to the map, but as a resource for actually driving the 'ring, as opposed to navigating it, I think it falls short.

That'll be tough, since most of it doesn't exist any more, and their method of rendering "real" tracks is photo-based.

wfooshee, all your points are valid... I originally did the map, not to tell people how to race it, but so when I was talking about it with other people , they could find out what the bends where called, instead of saying "you know that bit about 2 minutes in, with the left hander, then the right hander and then you go through that bit... y'know, the bit with the corner"

As far as bandwidth goes, the server it's on isn't normally that slow - but as we where visiting often it was all cached (guess it depends on your connection)

The rest of the site was about determining perfect lap times to aim for --- all very scientific... perfect lap profiles and power to weight to handling ratios etc...but most of that isn't there anymore.

I do like how it works, the popup pics are cool, but it took nearly 6 minutes to load! And I agree, as I said, about learning where the turns are, rather than actually how the best way through them might be, it works well.

How big are the JPGs being used? Are they actually downsized for the page, or are you resizing something from the original files, which are over a meg or two apiece. In other words, is my browser downloading the full-size file, then resizing it according to your page code? Pictures the size you're displaying should only be 20 or 30 K max, which wouldn't be such a strain, I would think.

As an aside, just to show you how thick the PS2 photomode files are, I find that I can load one up in Photoshop, do a Save As with no editing, save it in highest quality, and get a file of 15-20% the original size in bytes, without losing resolution or color depth.

Lastly, I agree with gregc about your corner names, I think there are some errors, I noticed Flugplatz right away, which is the right after the jump, not the long left sweep after.

:dunce: Yeah, some of the bend names arn't perfect, I referenced about 5 other maps on the web and some of them contradicted each other, so I could have got some wrong... the actual circuit map was done as an overlay from a satallite map (that can be found in many other places on the web).. so the track map should be good - even if the names aren't.

:sly: I rescaled all the images in photoshop from original size down to 200×150px... also auto contrast/levelled most of them.. however I would have probably saved most of them with JPEG compression set to about 10, 11 or even 12. Files on average are 28kb.

{PS.. 6 minutes seems long! the site is hosted in a folder on a server that holds about 7-8 sites for me, they all have been running extra slow in the last 5 - 7 days - especially some chatrooms that are hosted.. no idea why this is the case!, but even ctrl+F5 it only takes my crappy AOL connection ~45 secs to get the lot down}

:ill: I've just uploaded some of the older pages (not alot on them)

dont follow this link if you are offended by bad language etc... it was just written for me an a few mates!

Loaded very quickly for me as well (using cable broadband)... less than 20 seconds.

Great effort, and a worthy tribute for such a magnificant and historical track.

Just tried it at another computer, on the same network, obviously different time of day, and it loaded in about 20 seconds! That's more like it, and certainly increases my opinion of its value to the world. :sly:

We don't have a caching system on our network, so it's a valid check of loading speed. I can't explain what happened to me before, but it took FOREVER to load on my first try this afternoon.

i got an official map of nordschleife and gp-circuit.
maybe you could use it. (at least for the spelling. :sly: )
if you're interested i could send you some scans of it.

Nice map 👍 Some pretty nice pictures too, and it loaded in maybe 5 seconds for me, pics and all. :odd: Anyway, nice work! :)👍

It loaded in less that 10 seconds for me with broadband cable.

Nice job. Your map with the pop-up GT photos are so cool. I didn't even realize it had those pop-ups at first. I was saying to myself that it doesn't seem to be a very detailed map, but it is just great. I'm currently near the end of a 24 hour stint at the Ring and can appreciate the map and visualize it in my head, roadbumps and all. Keep up the good work. Maybe also a map for Sarthe.
