Nürburgring - the best way to take the last corner?

Just wondering what is the best way to take the last corner at Nürburgring and what is your technique when you start on the final straight? is it possible to drift around that last bend and maybe almost catapult you to the finish line.

Also when do start to slam on the brakes on that final straight?

While I'm not sure exactly, I think I go wide in the last corner, than turn in and hit the apex again, to keep speed up, then go wide again to try to get as high a speed as possible. I also don't start braking until well after the sweepers start. I'm a late braker type.

Well, turning right usually helps with the last corner, and I just keep the gas to the floor on the last straight and cut through the grass at the end.

Just joking, but what are you so concerned about the final corner for? If you made it that far with no problem it shouldn't be a worry for you.

It really depends on the car.

that car can't barely go over 260 km/h (162.5 mph) :
I'd say the first chicane, you pass it without even braking. Then on the approach of the left-right-left I brake and downshift to 3rd gear at approximatly 110 km/h (72 mph). Until the last corner (right) I am at full throttle and I only tap the brake to negociate the corner then full throttle again.

I haven't really drive Powerfull cars on that track, so I can't tell you for these... Hope it helps.

I feel like it's a shame to waste all that speed on that final straight, it's in my mind I'm thinking "Don't break yet etc" then when I finally start to break I feel like I could have left it a bit later but when I get to that final corner I just think I could have done it slightly better.

I don't start breaking until quite late anyway but I can imagine there is a really simple line that I haven't noticed yet, your right that I've got around to that point so it shouldn't bother me, also there is something about the left of the track just before that final right that looks ripe from drifting around I just don't have that skill at the moment.

Using the Vanquish I've done it in under 8 minutes (only just mind) which hopefully is a pretty respectable time but the last straight was incredibly messy and if it was a real car it wouldn't have a been a pretty sight it does have to be said.

I should know how to take the corner by heart, I am after all 2-1/2 hours into the 4hr Nurb race, in A-spec. I just never pay attention, the corner just comes naturally.

The thing with this is, it's really the only slightly difficult corner that leads to an important section. Sure, there are other important sections, but they are easy to nail. Sure there are tricky parts, but they don't really affect the lap much. I must admit, it's the part of the lap thats the scariest, in my opinion.

I suppose you mean the last set of corners... immediately before the final right, left, right that takes you onto the start finish line there is a very tricky left hand turn - how to take this turn depends very much on the car you are driving and your ability to handle that particular car.

I find that in powerful MR vehicles I almost always need to brake slightly before this left hander so that the car is not on the limits of traction when I need to brake heavily for the final RLR.

In other layouts I seem to be able to brake later without upsetting the balance of the car too much.

Whatever car you are driving will be doing its top speed at this point so this last set of corners will always be difficult - track down the Hans Stuck video - very useful for learning lines on a lot of corners on this track.

...and what is your technique when you start on the final straight? is it possible to drift around that last bend and maybe almost catapult you to the finish line...

Unless you are some sort of legend drifter (and even then only sometimes, if at all) you will never go faster by drifting - I am by no means any sort of expert on drifting but from what I have read I think that statement is generally agreed upon.

I find this corner very difficult to manage - it is difficult to find the apex and there is a high gutter - again it depends on the car but finding the apex is the main thing. At least with this corner you know when you have gotten it right - it is a great feeling to stay on full throttle only just managing to stay on the track and then watching your opposition disappear in your mirrors.

I often have dificulty here too. Coming off the straight, I often brake enough to downshift once after the second slight left. Then I take that right and slam on the brakes entering that left with the extra pavement off to the left, ride high on the cobblestone and exit at the apex of the next corner. Of course, if somebody gets me mad on that straight, I skip brakes alltogether and run straight into the wall, spin and continue on my merry way. This is often faster.

As for that last corner, I start wide, and turn in early. I cut close to the wall and get carried to the outside of the cobblestones there. But you have to cut back fast because that pavement ends fast.

So, left, left, brake, downshift, right, gas, left, slam the brakes, right, gas, left, brake, right, gas. <- To follow my chain of actions better.

Yeah, that made it alot easier, j/k.:sly:

I've never tried drifting that last corner though, might be interesting. I'll try it and tell you how it goes.

just like me
But I did have driven faster/more powerfull cars
every car has it's own way of handeling abviously, but this is also my strategy

i will always remember that corner. As I would always mess up on that corner while attempting to get my license, when i messed it up i would often get angry, knowing i'll have to do it all again

I would like to help on this subject but as i believe someone else has noted it doesnt really stand out as a difficult part of the legendary track. However what I can say is that it is a very different ball game in some cars e.g. a top spec race car can become very nervous when coming into the last section after the straight, I will refer to my top tip for driving techniques though: PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!
Happy Driving :)

That is oh so true.

considering all the other corners, like it was said, the last corner should be no problem.

The only experience ive had with that corner is in a 300hp, suspension tweaked mustang in which id go wide, try my best to hold the apex, and try to keep in third but always ended up having to downshift into or halfway through the turn.

That would be nice Philly.

OK. This is a drawing and it is not exact, but you should get the main idea.

Red = Brake, Green = Go.

My line may not be ideal, but it seems to work for me. You can also get pretty agressive with the AI on it.

Drift through the corner. :) I do it all the time while braking with the 2 left tires in the grass, so that your car will drift right. You would most likely need full countersteer to do this. You can practice this until you master it. I've GOLDED the skyline liscense test on fuji speedway '90's using this strategy.
