NAT 2 then 3 mystery... I'm going "nuts"

PS3 connected to Netgear router (WRG614) and to BT broadband.

Used to play online with a NAT type 2.
After 15th April upgrade, NAT became "type 3", without me doing any other change and would not play online (Failed Match), although other online games and Internet are all OK.
Tried to connect PS3 to router both wireless and wired (homeplugs), tried all router tricks (port forwarding, static IP, DMZ) but NAT stays "3" and no online games.

Then tried to plug PS3 straight into ADSL modem (bypassing router): NAT is still "3", but online play now works very well !!!

This is strange since the manual says that NAT 1 is for straight connection to internet and also says that with a NAT 3 it is very difficult to play (!?).

Is gameplay on "NAT 3" somehow limited to only few people with bad connection? is it what this NAT scoring means?

If I change wireless router, is there a model that really works well with GT5P?

Either that or either forward the correct ports (mentioned in the manual and the news section ingame) or activate UPnP on your router.

Another thing that *might* be a problem is the fact that your ADSL-modem might not be just a modem, but also contains a router (lot's of them do actually). In that case I would suggest deactivating the router functionality in your modem.

I have a modem/router (Linksys AM200) and a wireless router (Asus WL500_GP)
I had some problems recently with my modem disconnecting from the internet, so today i upgraded the firmware, resetted to factory settings and configured it again.

After this the connection to the ps3 is fine, can login in on the psn network without problems. It even saysi have nat2, just as before (gives a warning with ip fragmentation not supported, but that's not a problem)
But when i start up gt5p i get an error saying that connecting to the server has failed.
I can do absolutely nothing online in the game :(

Hi Saggio,

My nat is type 3, yet i have no problem connecting to other players or hosting a game where players can (and fortunately do) enter.

So, the nat 3 is not a problem to race for me.... from what i gathered the type 2 is needed when you want to (voice)chat online (which i'm not sure is actually supported by GT5P).

nat type 1 (actually no nat, direct routing, all ports open, ps3 has public ip).)
nat type 2 , ps3 has a private ip, but all ports are reachable from the interent and vice versa.
nat type 3 , ps3 has private ip and can talk to the internet, but no ports are forwarded From the internet to the ps3.

But if you want to change into nat type 2, then you should forward the ports needed from internet to your PS3. (as the ports from your ps3 to the internet are in place (nat type 3)).

It seems it's only one prt you need to forward, this one:

UDP: 3658
So on your router make sure that packets that arrive from the internet on your router with destination port UDP: 3658 are forwarded to your ps3.

Okay, great message, just tried it myself but still have nat type 3.
So forget all i posted ;)

Perhaps look into the PnP setting ;)

Guess what, I solved my problem!!!!!
Put my modem in bridged only mode and put the pppoe data in the router.
So know the modem acts only as a modem and not as a router.
First had some troubles by doing this because it caused my firewalls to do strange things.
Anything except plain internet didn't work, including msn messenger.
restarting the pc's and the ps3 solved that problem.

Now i've also entered the ps3's ip as DMZ.
This has the effect that i can now play GT5P online with upnp enabled in the ps3 settings, without getting the matched failed error.

Also the error of ip fragmentation is gone :)

edit: also noticed that my ping dropped when testing my internet speed online

A few players have reported seeing a NAT type 0.

I am one of them, but it only lasted one day and it didn't cause any problems (that I could see) for entering any races.

If you get a Matching Error while trying to enter races, SONY suggests going to Prologue's Options/Network and clearing your cache. I find this works most of the time. This type of error may be associated with older routers (with a missing feature ?), too, but this still needs proving.

Also, if you are getting timed out when trying to enter races with a different "fail" error after going through the match making process, check all other computers you have on-line, to see if any are downloading torrents or using up your bandwidth in some other way, such as video conferencing. Chances are your bandwidth load is too high.

Cheers,

MasterGT

Thank you guys, but I was not very clear in my original post.

I have a BT Voyager ADSL modem connected (Ethernet) to a Netgear Router.
The funny stuff is that NAT type stays 3 via the router or if I plug the PS3 straight into the ADSL modem. The differnce is though that with the former I cannot play on line whereas with the latter I can.

I would like to make the connection via the router to work, 'cause swapping cables everytime I want to do a quick play online is not very good.

I have tried Port Forward and DMZ on my router, but NAT stays 3....

I have a firewall device doing pppoe through modem in bridged mode. firewall has port 3658 fwd'd and i can see the connections and traffic coming through but still have nat type 3

i have no issues with connecting and playing.

Sounds like BT have been messing around with their systems. As standard BT will offer no better than NAT type 2 and your router will normally turn that into NAT type 3 (unless you use port forwarding or a DMZ), but if you still get NAT 3 when plugged straight into your ADSL modem its at BT's end, and not yours!

Call them up and shout at them! They should be able to tell you what has happened and sort it for you!

Thanks to everyone in this thread, now I have NAT2 and upnp on my system. Bridged the modem, and enabled DMZ on that port, voila!

:D
