I have cable (optimum online)
Guidelines:

-Very good wireless range. Needs to be powerful enough to travel through a house built in 1835 with plaster steel mesh walls. I guess wireless N.

-Fast DL speed. I like my Top Gear and I like it fast. I also play games and do not like lag.

-But it has to be affordable. In other words the best price to speed ratio. I would say my price is anything under $130 USDS.

-Reliable

-Decent warranty

These seem ok? Y/N???

Belkin - N+ Wireless-N Router with 4-Port Ethernet Switch and USB Port

NETGEAR - RangeMax Wireless-N Gigabit Router with 4-Port Ethernet Switch

Linksys - Wireless-N Gigabit Wireless Router with 4-Port Switch

D-Link - Xtreme N Wireless-N Gigabit Router

I am using a Linksys,model # WRT54G.
It works perfectly.I run 2 pc's off of it,the PS3,and the kids X-Box 360.Never had any problems with it.

nick, have you looked at the reviews of the router you recommended? The Newegg reviews tend to be written by people who overestimate their "tech level", but the failure rate is pretty high.

I personally use a WRT54GL with Tomato firmware. I get exceptional signal from the far end of the house to the garage, but I don't have plaster steel mesh walls.

Well I can agree with the fact that most of the people who shop at newegg don't know what they are doing but they have good deals.

I currently use a dlink DIR-615. It has a pretty strong signal. A friend who lives next door got a 20% signal strength with his PS3 from my router. I also don't have plaster steel mesh walls either.

I'm having some problems with my router and I thought heres the best place to post, because I'm not having much luck on Google. Yesterday I came home to find my (DSL) D-Link 2640B router wouldnt connect to the laptop and when I looked at it all that was lit up was the power button, in red which is only red when its booting. I've tried resetting it but that doesnt seem to work although I may be doing that wrong. Any ideas of what could be the problem? Do I need a new router and if so would any DSL versions of the ones mentioned be fine?

Make sure the router is on and hold down the reset button with a pen for at least 5 seconds. If that doesn't work, you might be looking at buying a new one.

I'm not sure how it works in Ireland, but you might be able to get a new one from the (I'm assuming) phone company. Did you buy the DSL/router or are you paying for it monthly? Regardless, I'd be a good place to start, I would think.

Thanks for the quick reply, but its not the news I wanted to hear. :(
The company I'm with sent a fixed router when we got the broadband (which I'm using now) but I bought the D-Link wireless router myself. Looks like I'll be making a trip into town tomorrow to find one at a good price. The D-Link one was G standard and my connection is only 1Mb/s would a G+ router be any better or is G well capable of handling 1Mb/s?

This will give you a good overview of the various wireless standards, but in short, G can handle up to 54 Mbps - well more than your 1Mb connection.

As for what you're currently using, am I understanding you correctly that it's just a DSL modem wired straight into the computer? Wall --> DSL --> computer?

Don't buy a d-link. Mine just died out of the blue. My dad told me that all the D-link products he's ever had have done the same thing... they last for a year and then go kaput.

That does seem to be what has happened mine. It was completely out of the blue, but up until then I had little or no problems what so ever with it. I'll be sad to see it go.

I just had the ADSL modem/router plugged into the phone line and then connected two laptops to it wirelessly and the playstation3. I dont have it wired to any desktop computer though.

I agree, dont buy D-link. I have had real trouble with their products in the past and many routers and wi-fi cards of theirs have just either not worked (DOA) or died after a few weeks use.

Got this Linksys router (http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/...c_3/3|cat_12160263|Modem+routers|12160266.htm) from argos earlier today, now I'm having fun trying to find my broadband username and password (any ideas other than ringing the service provider would be appreciated).
Is it possible that if I plug it into my old wired modem router and use the wireless that way for a few hours would the new wireless modem router change to the settings used by the fixed router? And then be able to run on its own, without me having to enter usernames and passwords, I think this happened with my D-Link one because I dont remember finding the password then either but after a week being used through the fixed modem I plugged it straight into the wall on its own and it worked fine, maybe I missing or forgetting something though.

I'm not entirely sure this will work, but if you are using Firefox, you might be able to go into Tools --> Options --> Security tab --> Saved password button --> Show Passwords.

Provided you had the password saved, of course...

Thanks for all your help and advice guys, I'm fully functional again. :D
I used a piece of I'm pretty sure not so legal software to uncover the characters behind the asterisks in the password text box and got the password that way, and now everything's right.
Thanks again. 👍

As long as you use your powers for good instead of evil, we'll let it slide this time. ;)
