Need for Speed Unbound - General Discussion

Haven't read the whole thread yet, but been reading the GTP news and watching the trailers. I'm probably not the target audience for this game, because everything about it just turns me off. It looks like someone edited NFS Heat footage with Windows Movie Maker effects. The graphics looks the same, the city looks the same, the way the car drives looks the same. But here, have some colorful crayons to make it look LIT (or whatever kids says these days). I was cautiously optimistic when they showed the cel shaded characters that it was going the Automodellista route, but this just seems like a lazy gimmick.

The body customization being able to remove panels is a step forward, but probably there will only be a handful of cars that can receive it, and only 1 main kit per car so everything looks the same in the end. Also, the reason why customization was so popular in the Underground - Undercover era was because you can freely customize any car you've unlocked in arcade mode without spending credits. Since then you gotta buy the car and buy the parts for every car. It's a grind and I just end up driving stock cars most of the time.

This not coming on PS4, just makes it easier to ignore for me.

Forced Induction Sound Slider 🤩

New gameplay trailer for the "Takeover" game mode:

Pretty much seems to be a re-introduction of Speedcross from Payback. Now, I personally enjoyed Speedcross, so I don't hate it, but this reveal, as well as the accompanying "article" is a bit of a nothingburger. Hopefully the Under The Hood article on Friday gives a bit more away.

Still hate that it's called "Takeover," though.

I got really concerned hearing “takeovers” were being featured, but thankfully it looks more like a faster paced and less free-form take on Dirt 3’s Gymkhana mode.

(Rather than a public intersection or highway shut down where you take your V6 Chargers and Camaros and G35s and do poorly attempted donuts with people hanging out the windows and a crowd shooting fireworks at you while also being far too close and/or running straight in front of sliding vehicles).

Delivering cars without taking too much damage while the cops are chasing you in their "always faster than your car no matter what it is" vehicles sounds very frustrating, hopefully they've scaled things a little bit better this time round. I like the fact they added a forced induction slider though, I'm looking forwards to making my cars sound like a wall of pure boost coming down the street.

Which is hilarious considering this is next gen only.
Indeed. I'm sure if you pause and look closely you can see more details, but the general feeling of the graphics is the same as Heat. Whereas the 2015 NFS trailer just completely blew me away with the detail and realism jump from PS3 to PS4 (Rivals doesn't count as its also cross gen).

That's how it is with each console generation, you get diminishing returns with graphics. I can go back and play GT5P on PS3 and it still looks pretty darn good for today. Since then it's just been marginal gains on graphics, unlike the massive jumps from PS1>2>3.

Sometimes the graphics gains may be marginal because of the boost in resolution that has occurred recently. As games start to run at 4K (either natively or upscaled) you have to remember they are rendering up to 4x the resolution of 1080p and so you can't necessarily boost the visuals to the same degree as if you stick with 1080p.

Yep, people forget that this generation jump is more focused on resolution x framerate rather than the typical visuals/graphics of the previous console jumps.

Drift events have been confirmed, though this time around they will take place on closed tracks with 3 AI cars, similar to Underground 2.

First time I've ever had a press release for a game which has the word "****" in it. Whoever that is apparently spends a lot of time sitting on cold things...

Also fun to note the release censors the name of the title track throughout... except in the attached track listing. 🤷‍♂️

Edit: Just spotted the track from "Thoto". Not cool.

Higher Brothers!!!

Good Morning Friday Feeling GIF by GIPHY Studios Originals

Also happy to see Strangers with Danger Mouse & RTJ on the list.

I haven't sat down to actually listen to the soundtrack yet, but there's definitely a couple...brave picks on here, to say the least.

Hopefully with Unbound, especially with EA banging on about the global soundtrack, they don't have certain songs locked to particular regions like they did with Heat and Payback.

If someone does not know whats going on in that picture:

Theres a great video explaining it:

I know its Donut Media ^^ but imo a great video about what Bosozoku is...

I have to say I'm really enjoying the soundtrack this time round, there's a lot of tracks that I like in there. I never imagined I'd see a Tommy Cash track in a NFS title. This certainly beats out Heat for me.

I only just realised that Palaces by A$AP Rocky is on the soundtrack too. I hope it's available while racing too, this might be one NFS game where I make the music louder than the in-game sounds.

Putting a track with an albeist insult in the title is a bit more than brave.

Especially when you consider that there's been two pretty prominent examples of that particular insult being called out in music this year and the artists - Beyonce Knowles and Lizzo - apologising and removing it from the tracks, and that Codemasters is a UK developer so there's no "oh but it's not really a slur in the USA" excuse.

Ooooohhhhh. Not gonna lie, I had zero idea that the title in question (not sure if typing it out violates the AUP, since it isn't auto-censored) was considered significantly more offensive in the UK than the US, nor was I aware of the Beyonce and Lizzo controversies (I really don't keep up with music industry news that much). In that case, that really is a even more surprising addition, and that it seemingly went past both Codies and Criterion without getting flagged.

Honestly, I thought you had taken issue with the artist's chosen handle, which I also don't care for.

The insult is derived from a UK based charity that changed it's name in 1994 because of the way the word was being used (their name is now Scope if you want to research the history yourself, I won't link here for fear of breaking the AUP).

Combined with the recent controversies that Famine mentioned I'm very surprised it has made it into the game.

I only recognize a couple names on the soundtrack, and i can't say i think much of those artists. I almost feel like i am reading a different language when i look at it tbh.

Is any of it not rap/hip hop?

From what I've listened to so far, there are a few electronic songs mixed in, but the overwhelming majority of the soundtrack is going to be hip-hop focused/adjacent. However, there's a lot of international artists on offer, so there's some good variety in that regard.

I will say that in terms of quality, Unbounds soundtrack blows Heats out of the water imo, offensively titled track(s) notwithstanding.

Thanks EA. I think i will stop sharing anything NFS related.

I'm glad I didn't watch the video with my children. I wasn't expecting the language to be so salty

Hype for this game seems to have fallen off a cliff.....

Personally still very on the fence
I'm almost certainly going to get it but I'm going to get EA Play for a month so I can get the early access 10hr trial.
