I know that there are many threads on this subject, but I have some specific questions regarding nitrous system's that weren't discussed in any of them.

I am pondering putting a nitrous kit in my car. (IS300)
The questions that I have are these.

1. How does high altitude effect the system and how it works in the vehicle? (I live at 8150 feet above sea level)

2. How does extreme cold effect the system and how it works?
I know that you can get heating jackets for the bottle, but will these be effective enough? (temps. where I live can dip into the -20F during the winter)

Thank you for you feedback!

I answered this in the HMRCWG thread...read my posts after you posted the question...

I did read your post's MazKid! And I thank you for your help, but I needed more information in regards to the "bottle" itself.

I asked you for more info but you left because you got your new "grill."

ohh sorry...yea I got tied up with the grill cause when I get new stuff I focus on that...sorry.

DO IT! Make sure the engine can handle it if its a shot over 75, it may require a hefty amount of money. The cold weather would only effect the bottle of NOS, and not the engine, in fact, the engine should be able to handle it a bit better because of the lower temperatures (problems come when the engine gets really overheated....or worse....when it misfires).

Dont use it. It's hell on your engine. But if you do descide to put the gas in your car make sure your engine can handle it.

Agreed. N2O is the cheap, quick way out. Just like the Dark Side, it'll corrupt you sooner or later. Especially on a car that damned nice.

I had thoughts of putting laughing gas in my car but then I thought. I wanna keep my engine in one peice. So thats why I didn't use it. Plus its a lot of work to set it up right.

Man, is everyone misinformed??
We have a guy at JBO that has run from 78 to 100 shot of NitrousExpress on his basically stock 1997z24. He has the usual header, intake and thats about it. He runs stock throttlebody and all else is stock and runs 13.6 on the setup. Hes an auto too.
Now for the punch line.
Hes been doing if for 2 years for every week and has made hundreds of passes with the nitrous and no problem with the engine.
Folklore and fallacy is what makes topics like this useless.
Get the kit, the bottle warmer and get a fuel pressure regulator for the extra fuel you may need in very cold weather.
Youll need colder plugs by two temp ranges and make sure you get a wet system as they are the least likely to give you the killer detonation.
Ppl, its the detonation that kills your engine, not the nitrous.
Just like boost, you must monitor the air/fuel ration along with the pressure on the bottle, hence the bottle heater.
Boombexus, your car is the perfect candidate for the laughing gas. The IS300's engines are solid to about 300hp before any internal work or reinforcement is necesarry.
Good luck with it and remember the bottle warmer, air/fuel gauge, fuel pressure regulator and a good time having some fun.
Good luck.

Finally...someone who actually knows what they're talking about.;)

Are you ever going to run Nitrous through your "Z?"

you have an IS300?

it uses the NA version of the Supra engine...

Nitrous is the go fast easy way to do it, but if you over use it, without the equipment misnblu talked about, you're in to replace a few engines!

either try to turbocharge the 2JGTE, or simply swap out a 2JZGTE (Supra TT engine) that's 320hp from a bone stock engine, enough to make you hit 13s at the strip, and scare a few cars on the street.

ok, ok... so a 2JZGTE costs more than a Nitrous kit...

make sure you have all the equipment, and get help from pros to install it if you go the Nitrous way!

2JZGE = N/A 2JZGTE = TT:P

IS300 S/C Kit! 305hp at 5.5psi. Expensive though.:P

I've also seen a Turbo Kit, but I don't recall where.

A 2JZGTE engine swap would definitely be the sweetest thing you could do here.:D Most expensive, but sweetest.:P

uh, yeah... that's what i mean... :P 2JZGE...

what i want to know is why it made 225hp in the Supra, and only 210 in the IS...

Thank you all for your help in this subject!

Misnblu, thank you for your "solid" advice and technical help. Do you know of any adverse effects at high altitude? Will nitrous that is left in the lines freeze? I was contemplating getting a "dry" system, 50 shot! With a 50 shot, do you still need colder plugs?

It's a kit that a good friend of mine is selling. He had it on his Jetta and he absolutly loved it. I do want a turbo charger but the price ranges are a little on the high side.

Josh, that supercharger is actually the least expensive forced induction kit that I have yet to come across. Prices have ranged from $6,000 to $30,000.

Go to www.toyomoto.com to see the $30,000 one! :D
It's rated at 606 WHP! (I have that issue of Turbo Magazine)

Again, thank you all for your input, it is much appreciated!

Boom

It's probably not the exact same engine.:) I mean, they did stop using it in the Supra like 4 years ago, and they had to build new 2JZGE's for the IS300. Probably just put a few parts on that were a tad more restrictive, who knows?:D

1) JE pistons
2) Pautter Rods
3) Transmission Valve body
4) Head Gasket
5) Cast Iron Manifold
6) T-70 Turbo
7) Turbo Piping
8) Wastegate
9) Wastegate Piping
10) Blow Off valve
11) Intercooler
12) Intercooler Piping
13) Midpipe
14) DownPipe
15) HKS Exhaust
16) 720 CC Injectors
17) TT Fuel Pump Upgrade
18) Custom Fuel Pump Bracket
19) Custom Injector Fuel Rail
20) Steal Braided Fuel/Oil Lines
21) Haltek E6k
22) MSD DIS4
23) Direct Port NOS system
24) Electronic Boost controller

Total (labor included): $30,000.00

You get a fairly decent single turbo, direct port NAAAAWZ, and some other goodies, but I sure as hell wouldn't pay $30,000 for it.:nervous: I could buy that Supra I've always wanted instead.:D:P

The kit is almost as much as I payed for the car! :D

But 606 WHP!

With that kind of power you could really get into some trouble!

I would probably kill myself! :D

that's probably true!

i wonder how these 1000hp Supras are able to go straight!

606whp in a IS300... that would make a nice sleeper, however

boost is addictive...

I saw a article about the IS430, they shoe horned the V-8 from the LS430 into the IS300, and then supercharged it!

Wow, what I wouldnt do to get my hands on one of those!
They only made 1 though.

Nitrous should be fine at high altitude and cold temperatures. As misnblu said, the bottle heater will keep your pressure up. Nitrous does two things: cool the intake charge for denser air, and (more importantly) each molecule provides an extra oxygen atom for better combustion. Both things are good to combat the altitude effect.

Properly installed, N2O is no more dangerous than any form of supernatural aspiration. Any kind of boost increases your cylinder pressures dramatically, and worsens your chances or running lean and detonating. The key words are properly installed. It's easy to improperly install a nitrous setup, because of the relative simplicity and low cost. Nobody would spend $5 kilobux on a turbo setup, and then have cousin Vinny install it out behind the garage one weekend. But you might pay $300 and a case of beer to have him drop N2O in. The level of preparation and expertise involved in turbo/supercharging is usually higher, which is why they seem safer.

If I were you, I'd get a wet system, so that the extra fuel required is designed in, rather than a matter of chance. Running lean under boost/squeeze will kill your engine dead, no matter how stout the bottom end may be.

That being said, I can't say I'm a big fan of nitrous. It is cheap and can be effective. However, I wouldn't like to be dependent on the bottle. Also, I don't like the limited duration of the fun. I'd rather save my pennies and build a car that has the power anytime the pedal is down, even if it ends up not being quite as much power.

Everything NeonDuke said is correct and thank him much for the input.
YOu will still need to get colder plugs as this will prevent the dreaded detonation that can kill an engine. Never use platinum tip plugs as they get extremely hot and can promote detonation.
Btw, the Zex nitrous system is rated very good too. It uses bottle pressure to regulate the fuel along with the n20.
Oh and the extra n20 in the lines needs to be purged so you shouldnt have to worry about the excess being in the lines.
If you plan on running at the track, there are certain procedures you will have to follow and check your local track for the rules and regs of nitrous use at that particular track.
Josh, Im going with the Nitrous Express only when I get into the 14's all motor. I figure that going 14.9 all motor will keep most off of my bumper and if I need that extra boost, Ill hit the switch.
I would rarely use the n20, but will be nice to have when needed. ;)
Here are some links Ive learned from to help you out on the subject.
Zex Nitrous systems
Venom Performance
Nitrous information and maintenance
Nitrous Express
Hope this helps and get as much information as you can about the different systems before you buy.
Good luck man.

Thanks for the links Misnblu.:)

Good luck hitting 14's.;) What's your final goal with the "Z?" Maybe a turbo, some slicks, and 10 sec. 1/4mi?:D

Whatever the goal is, may you have the best of luck getting there.;)

Once Ive reached my goal with the car, I just plan on driving it and maybe some car shows along with my other z24 (1986 model). Its a work in progress and should produce over 200 hp at the wheels with the 6 cylinder engine.
The 86 z24 will be my technical showcase with video system, killer stereo and performance to keep more ppl off my bumper.
Life is full of surprises so we'll see what happens.
Later all.
