I have a security system and had someone break into a garage and steal a bunch of stuff. The cameras should have caught them but when I try to play back video on the DVR, the DVR crashes. I took the HDD out and tried to look at it while connected to my PC through a usb cord. I could only see there were 2 partitions and how big they were. I hooked it up to my mac and it said it had 2 Linux partitions so I downloaded a Ubuntu boot disk and fired up Linux.

I can see and open one of the partitions but it is only log files and tell me nothing except what days the cameras operated. The other partition is where the videos are stored and I can not get that partition to mount so that I can view the files inside of it.

Any help on what could be wrong would be great. This is the 3rd time we have been robbed and the only time since having the cameras installed. They stole about $7,000 worth of stuff and I would love to catch the people who are doing it.

I build/sell DVR systems.

Generally the three types of DVR products I sell, don't allow for viewing the recordings in another format besides the DVR program.

Does the DVR crash anytime you playback any recording? Or is it just the questionable time frame you are looking at?

What I see when I can't view a recording, is that the part of the disk has something wrong with it.

I'd contact the DVR manufacturer and see if they can help you. There might be a way to view it from another disk.

I would think even if you could get to the partition with the recordings on it, it probably won't play on a mac/pc.

Have you tried just saving the recording to a flashdrive/cd instead of watching it?

What brand DVR is it?

How long have you had it?

If you have another hard drive the same size as the one you pulled from the DVR. You could try cloning it to a new drive and hook it back into the DVR and see if that helps.
