need help on deselecting

ok, i am using photoshop 6.0 for this. i am trying to deselect the lights, grille, etc from a picture of a honda civic saloon and i am not sure how to do it on this version. you see, i am trying to change the colour of the car, and following this tutorial, it says to deselect any parts which are not part of the cay body (lights, grille, etc). so i need some help. can you give me some advice??

Duplicate the layer, color the whole upper layer (paying attention only the bits you want coloured, i.e. paint), and afterwards cut out the backgorund, lights, windows, trim, and anything else you dont want to be coloured. Afterwards you can merge the layers.

From your explanation it sounds like it wants you to select around the car and then inverse the selection. What tutorial are you using?

That just says to select the car and then hold down the alt key and select around the headlights and stuff so they aren't selected. The alt key removes a selection from the area you trace around holding it down. I would recommend for beginners to select the whole car, desaturate it using CTRL + Shift + U and then go to image, adjustment, variation, and choose a color. Next you right click on the layer and and choose properties or whatever and set the opacity of the layer to like 80 or 90 so you can see light reflections. Now select around the headlights and stuff and hit delete to remove the color on those areas. Make sure this whole time you are working on a duplicated layer of the original layer.
