Need help repairing PS2........about the silver ribbon

I just tried to open up my PS2 and clean the lens because I was getting disc read errors. So after I got all the screws off and attempted to take the lid off and it wasn't budging, I realized that I had the PS2 flipped on the wrong side (the top of the PS2 was facing down on the desktop and the bottom was facing up). When I flipped it over right-side up and removed the top cover, the ribbon slid out from the area holding it. I didn't tug hard, and the ribbon just came sliding out as if it was supposed to. The ribbon didn't tear or rip, one end just came loose. The other end is still taped down to the inside top of the PS2 cover where the power and eject buttons are. I had done this process before, so when this happened I immediately went "uh oh." Sure enough, when I plugged in the power cord and tried to turn it on, it didn't work. I noticed that there are some lines on one side of the loose end of the ribbon, as if to imply that the ribbon is supposed to be connected or taped down to something. Does anyone know exactly how and where that free end of the ribbon is supposed to go? I see a bunch of wires in the area where the ribbon came loose but I don't see any specific fit for the ribbon :indiff:

Look at the set of lines on the tip

This is where the ribbon came loose at once i took the PS2 lid off.

.....and this is a pic of what it looks like under the previous pic. Theres an inside with some wiring. Where is the ribbon supposed to go?

:guilty:

Is there any way to fix this or am I screwed?

You should have followed a walkthrough, it would have told you to be careful of the ribbon taped to the top of the case..... if its been yanked out and there is no obvious way for it to be put back in I think your going to need a new part...

As for the error, just clean out the dust, use some rubbing alcohol and a cue tip on the lens... and maybe oil the slider it moves on.

thanks......but i was following a walkthrough step for step. there is a part in it that says to be careful when removing the lid off the PS2 and to take care to not put tension on the ribbon. when i went to remove the lid, the ribbon just came out without me even tugging on it, as if it were loose the whole time. i never even had a chance to sit the lid on the side of the PS2 with the ribbon still joining the two.

Well fortunately I found out where it went and how to re-connect it. The PS2 is working fine (GTA: San Andreas is still giving me problems though). If anyone else happens to run across this problem then let me know and I will tell you how to fix it.

i knwo you have fixed you problem but just for the record, PS2 consoles have evolved in the past few years. I am not talking about the slim compact ones, the standard consoles are all different inside. If you open and old one and open a new one its like two different machines. The walk-throughs will throw off track if it was written for a different model.

The problem you experienced is a very familiar one. There is a shop here that sells second hand playstations. The staff get them in, turn it on and they work okay. They then decide to open the console up to give it a clean and the power ribbon pops out of place without even touching it. They dont see this and put the cover back on and bingo, the thing wont start. They put a sticker on if for 80% off saying (faulty PS2 - blown power supply) - £20 second hand. I mean, for chrissake, FAULTY PWER SUPPLY! - what idiots.

Anyway i have bought 4 of these now opend up and repaired in minutes and given them to my nieces and nephews. Even sold on on ebay for £50.

ihave been an electronics engineer for years but i lik ethese small victories, yes i am petty :)

Very good point indeed. When my situation happened and I saw that ribbon just sitting there flinging free, I panicked and figured that I would just be stuck w/o a PS2 until I could somehow scrounge up the dough for a PS3. Luckily I used my intuition and fixed the problem myself. I have yet to see a walkthrough describing the problem addressed in this topic, which is real unfortunate. Just think of how many other people this has happened to who lost all hope and just went out and dropped $150+ for another PS2 when the problem could have been fixed with just a little time and effort (and alot of duct tape in my case). In any case, the best walkthroughs should always be accompanied by appropriate pictures so the readers can see exactly what the person is talking about, because it can get confusing sometimes, especially for the not-so-technically-and-electronically-savvy crowd like me.

Hey guys, 08 kid here, got my dad’s old ps2, 2 years ago, and a year ago I stupidly did the same thing, how do I fix it, my dad and i have tried tweezers, but they are not exactly useful, unless we are doing it wrong. Any tips?
