Well, everytime I start it up, all I see is a black screen. I'm not sure what's wrong. I had the harddrive re-placed awhile back, because I overrused it.:D

I'm hoping to get it up and running so I can try out Linux, and learn some stuff about hosting on my own comp.:D

So any idea's what might be causing the trouble.

From what I know, I don't have any of the CD's and stuff.

Well, first of all, do you hear any beeps? If you hear 1 beep then that means everything is fine, and the computer is starting up.. If you don't get video after the beep then there might be something wrong with your monitor or the video card.

If you get beeps then you should crack open the case and make sure everythign is properly connected and make sure all the cards are fully plugged in, includng ram..

I don't know exact beep codes, but i do know that if it beeps more than 1 time than there must be something wrong. Heh....

Hope i helped.

Is this what you meant? :P

POST Codes

I had to go and search GTP for a thread milefile made in which I replied about post codes. Hope I could be of service.

I get nothing, everything's hooked up.

It just stays blank.
Open up the case and just start pushing stuff into their slots. Video card and hard drive cables particularly...I once dealt with a PC that would give a blank screen when the hard drive was unplugged. (did not even get past post). also, does the hard drive spin up? does the floppy light blink? does it stay on?

I'll take it apart tommorow night. The old HD failed so we had to buy a used one, which is the current one inside my computer. Also, is it possible to reformat it with my current computers disc?

what disks are you talking about? linux?

In that case yes, you can. I have done it many times, the problem is that it will convert your drive to FAT32 from NTFS, but if you're going to use linux it shouldn't be a problem ;)

Good luck!

ok, Listen for Post beeps - results -> Yes - follow post beeps link
No -> disconnect the peripherals such as all video card/sound card / modem / network card - you should now get a post beep
if not - take out memory - no post beep - take out processor and if still no post beep the motherborad is fried

also disconnect the monitor and turn it on you should get a test screen saying no connection

now with the disassembling of the parts do them one at a time because once you hear a beep you know the device that is causing the issue

probably not due to the fact that Compaq has a nasty way of setting up their computers with the BIOS on the hard drive, you can try what is the worse to happen. . .
