Well, first of all hello guys.

In the January/February, I update two computers of my house (my PC and my dad's notebook) from Win XP and Vista, respectively, to Win 8.1. Installed all of programs we both used and Avast as antivirus.

This week, my PC failed on me. I usually turn it on when I get home from university/work and turn it off when I go to sleep. I turned it off on Monday after Avast updated and asked for me to restart it. On Tuesday, I tried turning it on. Nothing. No lights, no sounds. It just plain out died on. Strangely, it's the first time it EVER done that in almost 8 years (got the PC as a anniversary gift back in 2006). After I installed Win 8.1 on it, I noticed some problems with it, like sometimes when I turned it on on some given dys it just wouldn't turn on. Had to go to the fix problems screen, and it would fix the problems and start as normal. I find that strange, but since it kept going on, I never cared of it having said problems. Anyway, it was a old PC so I thought that could be normal.

On my dad's notebook, it started it's life with Win Vista, and it stayed there until early this year. After my dad kept complaining about how slow it was and all that (even my mother and myself when we had to use the notebook we noticed how bad it was), my mom asked me to install Win 8.1 for him. Made a backup of all the things, did a backup of his files, had to install first Win 7 so I could upgrade to Win 8.1. Well, diferently from my PC, it never had any problems UNTIL today. Last night my dad did some work at home during the night and turned it off like he usually does. Since my PC is currently dead, I decided to use a bit so I could download some music. Turned it on, showed me the usual Windows loading screen, then nothing. Plain black screen. No login information or nothing, just a plain black screen. Turned it off then on, same problem. Did it again, it took me automatically to the fix problems screen. There's no restauration points that I can use, no backup images, nothing. Since the Win 8.1 I have is an .iso (got this from a deal between my high school and Microsoft) and it's a .iso it's on my PC (can't recover it), I just don't know what to do. I tried 3 times to boot the notebook on Safe Mode, but it shows the black screen again and again.

I just don't know what to do guys. I need my PC back (even it being old and all that) due to Uni work that's coming up soon and my dad needs it's notebook working so he can keep working at home during the night. Can anyone with knowledgeble on PC's help me?

Regarding the PC, check the power cable, try a different power cable, check the fuse hasn't gone in the plug, try and different socket. Also I would check all the cables inside the PC are tightly plugged in. It should post regardless of any issues with Windows which makes it looks like a hardware / power issue.

As for the notebook Windows 8 is notorious for startup issues because it is still pretty glitchy (thats why they are releasing major updates so often). If the link above doesn't solve the issue you may have to get hold of an 8.1 disk to boot into the recovery system.

You know what? I have the same problem too (your laptop problem). It is the 8.1 boot manager that's the problem. I hope they fix it in a future update (I look at the update logs, none thus far stated fixing the problem). I plan on making a new capture .wim when the problem is patched, then reinstalling windows.

Try booting to the HDD from the boot menu. How can I tell if the boot manager has failed? Look at the HDD activity light. If it starts blinking at a consecutive pace, restart your machine. If you get to the screen stating there was a problem with Windows starting, just continue on to Windows 8.1.

So yeah, I fixed them both. Sorry to @eSZee, @MHPALA and @Robin. for not answering.

On my PC, the problem was the power suply. It jus went kaput  Bought a new one, installed, PC was brand new. :D

On the notebook though, had to get the Win 8.1 instalation CD (took me a hour to find it, why did I hide it when I used it? Stupid old me ) and choose the refresh PC option and it came back to life as well.

Well, even though I'm a bit late on this, thanks to you guys for trying to help a lone soldier trying to fix a hardware and software problem. :gtpflag: :D
