New Alerts not Shown in Log

It has been some time since my last login, and upon logging in there was an icon over the Alerts tab. I hovered over the tab thinking I had new alerts but it told me that I have none. Clicking Show All also presents an empty list.

Do alerts have an expiration date and get removed if not looked at after a certain amount of time? Or could there be a bug that makes it seem like an empty alert log has new entries? I'm just worried I might have missed someone trying to contact me.

Yes, alerts expire and are removed after 30 days, although you may have to open the alerts menu to clear the cached counter value.
