Lexus LS 460

Lexus revealed the all-new 2007 LS 460 and the company's first-ever long-wheelbase model, the LS 460L, today at a press conference at the 2006 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). Seventeen years after its initial launch in Detroit, the redesigned LS now combines new levels of performance, sophistication, contemporary styling and luxury refinements.

"The Lexus LS 460 was designed to expand the definition of the full-size luxury sedan," said Jim Press, Toyota Motor Sales president and COO. "The new LS is the product of an advanced production process developed specifically for this vehicle with remarkable new levels of accuracy, refinement, precision and craftsmanship. Considering our record for quality over the last 17 years, that's quite a statement," he added.

High Output V8, World's First Eight-Speed Transmission
The LS will be powered by an all-new highly advanced 4.6-liter V8 engine that will produce approximately 380 horsepower and 370 pound-feet of torque. Combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission, a world-first, the LS 460 will travel from zero-to-sixty miles per hour in less than 5.5 seconds. With that level of performance, the new LS will achieve an estimated combined city/highway mileage in the mid-20s. Lexus is targeting an Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle II (ULEV II) rating for the LS 460.

The new LS is built on a sophisticated platform that maintains a delicate balance between ride comfort and responsive handling. The completely redesigned multilink suspension system includes an electronic power steering system and a next-generation Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system.

VDIM is an advanced stability system that integrates and manages a new Electronically Controlled Brake (ECB) system, Electronic Power Steering (EPS), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Antilock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and engine torque via the electronically controlled throttle.

Monitoring a variety of sensors, the system is designed to anticipate the onset of a vehicle skid or slide and then help correct the situation with a combination of braking, throttle and steering control in a way that is essentially transparent to the driver. Data is gathered from more sources and processed earlier and faster than in previous designs, helping to make VDIM less obtrusive and even more effective.

First Long-Wheelbase Sedan
At nearly 203 inches, the long-wheelbase LS 460L provides an even higher level of comfort and convenience features along with some of the most advanced technology ever offered in a production automobile. The four-passenger compartment of the LS 460L transports its rear-seat passengers in an environment whose luxury features closely resemble those of a private jet.

Luxury, Redefined by Lexus
Intelligent technology and emotionally evocative design is clearly evident throughout the beautifully appointed cabin of the new LS sedans. Extra luxury and comfort touches include a heated steering wheel and seats swathed in one of four tones of semi-aniline leathers matched to one of three coordinating wood-grain trims.

Rear occupants can relax and enjoy power reclining seats equipped with power leg rests and even a massage feature. The new LS even offers body-heat sensors that help maintain the perfect temperature for all occupants. A fold-away table matched to the interior wood grain provides ample work space for rear passengers. The LS also features a nine-inch headliner-mounted rear-screen monitor along with an all-new 19-speaker Mark Levinson® audio system that provides a true theater-level entertainment experience. Additional luxury convenience features include a power rear-door closer and an automatic-powered opening/closing trunk lid.

New Lexus Design Direction
Over the last two years, Lexus has developed a new styling philosophy that it calls L-finesse. This new design language rests upon the inherent contrast between simplicity and elegance-and the beauty of achieving a balance between the two. Simplicity, in form and function, reflects styling that is uncluttered and void of extraneous elements. Lexus elegance, inside and out, avoids exaggeration by prioritizing understated luxury that is intriguing, subtle, seamless and slightly surprising.

Lexus imbued the development of the 2006 GS and IS series sport sedans with this new styling direction. Now the LS further expands the L-finesse visual philosophy, revealing a family resemblance in the new Lexus sedans-one that conveys elegance, refinement and a strong emotional appeal.
"During the next few months, we'll provide more details about the all-new Lexus LS 460 as we prepare to launch this highly anticipated sedan," said Press. "If you like the way the LS looks, you'll be even more impressed when you hear about its advanced safety and innovative technology," he added.

The 2007 Lexus LS 460 and LS 460L are targeted for sale beginning in the fall of 2006.

Blazin's Note: I loved the IS350 and this thing is no acception. I really really like it, although it's rear is styled a lot like a BMW. But never the less it impresses me, plus an eight speed? Wow talk about the joys of shifting.

Lexus is determined to outdo its German rivals -- that much became apparent at the world launch of the LS at the Detroit show, at which Lexus showed the long-wheelbase version of the car. The new vehicle gets a 4.6-liter V-8 with 380 hp and 370 lb-ft of torque, coupled to an eight-speed automatic. Zero to 60 times of 5.5 seconds are promised. Power is up 36 percent from the previous generation with equal or better fuel economy, Press said. "Yes, we've one-upped them," U.S. sales chief Jim Press said during the unveiling. In a dig at rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz, Press also noted that the five-year-old copies of the LS are more reliable by Lexus' measures than brand-new sedans from the competitors.

The new 203-inch long-wheelbase LS gets a raft of tech equipment that Lexus officials said they would delve into more deeply at March's Geneva Motor Show. They include a 19-speaker Mark Levinson sound system with an internal hard-drive server that can store 4000 songs, making an iPod seem hopelessly retro. There's also a reclining rear-seat option with extendable ottomans a la Maybach, and a cooler and a separate DVD entertainment system. An intelligent park system will help drivers put their cars into tight spaces with only a little brake assist from the driver, Press added. The "ultimate Lexus," Press promised, will be on display at the New York show in April. it will be powered by a hybrid powertrain.

I like it. I like it a lot. 8 speed automatic tranny and a 0-60 time of under 5.5 seconds? Nice. It looks great too, though the rear end screams BMW 5-series to me.

I really like the L-finesse styling they have been doing lately. The GS300, for example, looks brilliant! Especially in white.

BTW: Great job on posting the news! I can't remember the Auto News forum being this active before. 👍

I can definitely see a lot of M5 in it too. Especialy when viewed from the side.

Not my cup of tea.

Thanks, since it's auto show season I figured everyone wants to see the latest and greatest...plus I'm studying to be an automotive journalist so I figure might as well stretch my legs a bit here.

But anyways...

The Lexus 5-Series looks better than the BMW 5-series. Take that Bangle.
Anyways, I'm not really a fan of the LS, as it has always seemed like the bloated Buick that it is. I'd ratehr have an IS or GS.

Nice to see BMW finally freshened up the styling on their big sedans.

*crew member walks over and whispers in my ear*

What?

Oh...I guess Lexus has finally built the BMW they always wanted too.

Damn shame it won't drive like one, but at least it's pretty.

I like the design. From the side, the rear does look a lot like BMWs, but overall, it's a very nice design. I love the rear-end(when not looking from the side).

Ouch!

I like it. Two things I've got a problem with...

1. I see lexus is still using their retarded light up needles and black backing.. Wait until they burn out.. If they cost 500 from the dealer for my 13 year old SC300, (needles burned 5 years ago..) God knows how much replacement will cost for this car..

2. Is that thing under the hood a pop-out dinner table or is there a motor somewhere underneath all that plastic?

Other than that, I think the Japanese just beat the Germans at their own game. Someone at Cadillac, BMW, and Mercedes better start paying attention.

That's one long car. I'd LOVE a roadtrip in that sucker.

The current LS has about the 290hp, the new one has 4.6 liters and 380hp.:) To compare the new S550 has a 5.5 liter V8 with 382hp.

More Hi Res pic of the new model.
The first Long Wheelbase Lexus looks like it wants to go after Maybach.

 this is just awesome. I've always been very impressed with Lexus interiors, and this is the icing on the cake. The exterior is also a big step up, nothing revolutionary, but after what happened at the 7 series, this isn't such a bad thing.

@Menglan: but they look great!! So much more than infinity's depressing yellow instrument clusters.

Eeeh, its OK... I've never been a Lexus fan, so this is no better than anything else they have made before... There are too many computers doing too many things in this car, but I suppose the same can be said for the BMW 7-series or the Mercedes S-Class...

High Output V8, World's First Eight-Speed Transmission

Good powerplant but wtf? If I wanted 8 forward gears I'd buy a damn Moutain bike. Stop with the increase in forward speeds and just switch to CVT transmissions already. BMW's 7 gears is stretching it...but EIGHT gears? Sheesh stop it already...next year what 10 forward gears? Wow 3 rantlike posts tonight...I must really be in a bad mood tonight. :indiff:

CVT = future
more forward gears = clinging to old generation technology

Interiors nice but I think Lexus and for that matter Toyota are getting full of themselves... I don't know what's inflating faster their heads or the badges.

Looks boring and kinda average. I saw a audi S8 today one of the new ones it was like OMG. That car was so big and beautiful and it had such presence.

erm...8 speeds?

I know that a nissan(forgot what moddel) sold in japan has 8 gears, but thats bcos of the CVT gearbox.

So what's with this gearbox? Is it a TC auto or cvt?

8 speed!?? I bet it will be hard goind along at 60km/h and thinking...hmm..should i use 4th, 5th, 6th or maybe 7th? hmm......

:dopey:

...Their bank accounts.

A bit bland for my taste, I think they might have kidnapped Bangle to do the do the rear end on that car.
Apparently engines are made of plastic sheets now... I think that if you're not wanting to see then engine, then you should leave the hood closed. Get someone else to do it.

WTF? 8 speeds? As long as they don't make an 8 speed manual. More gears equal shorter ratios equal more shifting. hell, some people can barely operate a 6 speed.

Looks great, but it'll sound like a semi-truck accelerating away from a light...

Vroom (shift), Vroom (shift), Vroom (shift), Vroom (shift), Vroom (shift), Vroom (shift), Vroom (shift), Vroom...

[fanboy]

I can't wait! I'm going to be the first GTP member to drive an 8-speed transmission in real-life!

[/fanboy]

Other than that, I can attest that modern-day LS owners don't open their hoods anyhow.

I'm willing to bet the car will skip shift, a lot... Just like the 7-speed Mercedes...

That's funny!

About the toyota getting full of themselves; complacency comes with the largest manufacturer title..
