New Power Supply

I just got an Antec TruePower 430. All the designs seemed in place - separate voltage rails, big fans, etc. It should be a BIG upgrade from my old 300w generic PSU, right?

It is more quiet. However, it is much hotter and much less stable. The CPU hit 145º just cruising the internet! It's never gotten that hot with the 300w, not even under a heavier load. Forget about running something taxing! It crashes right away. :irked:

I don't know what to think. Is the PSU defective? Does anyone else here have a 400w+ power supply?

I have the exact same power supply and I have no problems with it. The PSU should suck air in from the case and blow it out through the rear, so it shouldn't effect your CPU temperature. Right now, my Athlon 2000+ is sitting at a cool 47 C / 116 F with one case fan on and the CPU fan at 3600 RPM. What kind of processor do you have and do you have a heatsink and fan installed on it?

Athlon XP 1900+ (1.6 gHz). I have an Antec Jet Cool heatsink/fan combo. It's never run as cool as yours...I dunno. I just added an intake fan to the front of the case - it didn't make much of a difference.

Right now I have my old PSU in and it's running at 123º after just ten minutes or so.

I opened my case last night - the 430 was steaming hot. I mean, you could smell heated plastic. It must be defective; I'm going to exchange it this evening.
