I was playing earlier and everything was fine but then the game froze, i switched the PS3 off and restarted it but the game wont load? i ejected and put it back in a number of time but it still wont load, anyone have any ideas how to solve this?

Is it just shift you have this problem with? If not, that sound like the problem I had with my last ps3, bluray laser broken :ouch:

I had to buy a new ps3 slim :ouch: I have had my last ps3 over 2 years so had to pay if I was going to fix it and fixing bluray player is expensive! :(

Good luck mate 👍

I have just recently had my laser break on me. You could always buy a replacement laser and fit it yourself, there are loads of guides on how to do it. It doesn't cost much, mine cost £54 with 1st class delivery. Currently await delivery I'll let you know how I get on with fitting it.

Thanks mate, at the moment i am restoring default settings, i have been told this may work?

How common a thing is this?

After a VERY long wait, I finally broke down and got a PS3 a couple of weeks ago, and now I'm hoping I didn't go the wrong way. Not regretting yet, as I love the thing, but I've had PS1s & PS2s that could have lasted till Jesus came back, and they didn't cost near as much, and never had stuff like this happen.

Good luck on your fix mate.

I have had my PS3 for only thirteen months, i am just out of warranty, if the restore does not work i will see if the store i bought it from can be of any help?

I googled (PS3 game wont load) and was shocked by how many similar problems people are having.

BTW mine is the 80g version.

Usually a restore will only work sometimes if you can still play CD's/DVD's. If you cannot play anything you laser is completely broke.

Lasers can break anytime, it depends how much you use the console and how good the laser was in the first place.

I bought the whole laser unit. It cost £4 more than just the laser but it's much easier to install a whole new carriage than it is to replace the laser from the old carriage.

EDIT: Oops, forgot to mention you could always send it off to be repaired independently, it would cost around £100 for a laser replacement though once you add it the cost of sending the console too them in the first place. Study the procedure enough though and make sure you follow it well, you should be able to replace it yourself. It only involves unscrewing stuff and unclipping a few wires.

Thanks mate, if the restore does not work then this is what i will do.

Yes, there are lots of people, including myself, who have had the disc reader go. I had mine replaced by Sony ($179 CDN), but I think it may make more sense to but a new (cheaper) PS3, since the repair only comes with a 90 day warranty.

It seems pretty clear to me that although the PS3 did not have the same initial level of problems shown by the 360, over time, malfunction of the disc reader is occurring at significant rates. I think Sony should be fixing this problem at a much lower cost.

I cant believe how common a problem this is :grumpy: the restore did not work :grumpy: i am going to see what the store i bought it from says? i checked my reciept and if it is a years warranty then i am only 11 days over, i buy all my games and equipment from there, i also bought my wife a PS3 from there recently
I had the same problem a few months back where I couldn't start some of my games. I invested $17 for a BR drive cleaner (Maxell) and that fixed the problem: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00178HN0O/?tag=gtplanet-20

Maybe worth a go, thanks.

Definately contact Sony as soon as you can. If its only just barely out of warranty they still might fix it free. Companies aren't supposed to sell things that are designed to only last exactly to the point the warranty ends.

Have to say I never had any real luck with Sony products over the years. My Ps2 slim (one of the later models) has so many little flaws I stopped counting them. atm it will only read discs if I place a bottle of water (or anything of the same weight) on top of it because somehow the mechanism detecting if the lid is closed is broken. Again. Had a fix applied so that the laser won't burn itself out, after having another laser unit fitted.

Still, with prices down for new hardware and auction houses offering sometimes good deals for used ones - annoying but sadly nothing can be done :/ Won't stop me getting a PS3 slim next year though, 250 EURs aren't that much money after all, and hobbies do cost money.

Done some research myself, managed to get hold of the replacement parts and instructions, and had my electrician do the work. Maybe the same is feasible for you, too? To my experience Sony is rather strict on warranty and it's nothing they like to discuss. But they are not the only company, I'm a Mac user, I had my grudges with Apple customer support, too.

Best of luck mate!

Thanks for the information guys, well i just came back from where i bought it and even though it is just out of warranty they basically did not want to help :grumpy: so a call to Sony next.

EDIT.

Well i just got off the phone to Sony and i am really pleased, they are sending a courier to pick up the PS3 tomorrow and they will either repair or replace my PS3 with a new one, all this free of charge even though the warranty has expired.

That's good to hear. They replaced my 60gb wityh another 60gb within a week when it went bust after 3 months. I was very impressed with how fast i had a new one.

Good to hear Sony are doing this.

I think Sony should be repairing this (frequent) problem on ALL PS3's whenever it occurs (after warranty) for the amount it costs them to carry out the repair. I think it's understandable that new technology, like the PS3, will have problems at times. I don't think it's fair that Sony should be making a profit fixing the problem, however.

Good to see Sony are helping.

I must say that the Sony Representative was great on the phone and in the way he dealt with this, he did admit that this is a known problem and now they use a different kind of laser equipment to overcome the problem.

When my PS3 was repaired by Sony, it took only 3 days from the time it was picked up to the time it was returned - quite impressive, but I don't know how typical that is.

👍 Haven't expected this - good egg, this Sony representative!

Nice going with Sony.

I had my laser arrive in the post late last night so I've spent a good few hours fixing it all up today. It's quite an easy task to do actually, I think I could be comfortable doing it from memory if I ever needed to do it again. Simple process of undoing screws and unclipping about 6 wires. If your out of warranty and Sony aren't willing to fix it for free I would definately recommend fixing it yourself.
