Maybe i'm missing something....but where is reverse gear. In all the other racing games when you use a manual transmission you just shift down to reverse. But in GT5 that doesn't happen for me. Have I set up the controls wrong? Do I have to assign a button for reverse. If so thats a pretty weak mistake to let slip through final testing.

Which i think is wrong. I'd MUCH prfer it to be a selectable gear, that way it frees up another button.
i.e.

R-N-1-2-3-4-5-6 (-7 etc)

It'll be on my wishlist forever i predict. :(

it also is availible when your spinning, makes doing 360 spins a lot easier and fun ie going say 160 hook the handbrake, get into reverse and then finish it off with a J-Turn only losing 20kph

If you were using a G25/G27 or a Fanatec wheel with Shifters then you would have
R-N-1-2-3-4-5-6 (-7 etc) and Clutch operation

Quick! Someone tell Ferrari they're doing it wrong...

Incidentally, reverse gear is selected via another button on the tunnel-mounted panel but the F430 isn’t keen on going backwards and registers its disapproval at not going fast forward by seemingly restricting power making it hard work.

All of the officially supported GT wheels have paddles behind the wheel and/or a sequential lever. This, in effect, gives every car in GT a sequential gearbox.

No real life sequential gearbox can go from 1 to N to R. They all have a button or some kind of procedure to go into reverse. Admittedly, you then press the throttle to gain speed in reverse, but the button push is still required.
