Simple B-spec starts with B and Bob starts with B, its an alliteration.

By the way its just a nickname that stuck, its not official. It Started back in GT4 I believe.
Jordan also did an april fools joke (news story) about GT5 being a B-Spec game only.

Thanks gror and CRCError1970. Google just doesn't register with me on some questions. One day I'll figure it out.

Anyway, that works. Alliteration for B-spec Bob.

Ha, I've wondered this so many times myself. Glad I found this post. Sadly, it was much more simple answer than I was hoping for, but oh well now I know.

Bitc* on Board? my preferred thought when he comes up behind slower cars and decides to get behind them rather than pass...especially when he's in the GT and they're in a Honda Civic ARGH!!!!

I believe this is the correct answer. BOB stands for Born On Board when referring to aliens that were born on a spaceship instead of their home planets. Since the B-Spec drivers in gran turismo were technically created in the game, and not in real life, they would be Born On Board of Gran Turismo.

Maybe it comes from the old FPS game 'Marathon' which had CPU allies called Bob and VacBob.

In Holland we call people the BOB if he doesn't drink alchohol
and drives the other people that do party and drink. The BOB
is the driver of the drunk people.

The only thing shorter would be B-spec Bo.. if you are talking about a name.. B-spec B wouldn't make sense really. hmm Marathon game in the early 90s was before I think.. Vac-Bob's or clones that could survive and fight in the vacuum of space. "They're Everywhere" ;)

I see some of you know your video game history, good good. 👍

I may also add the original Marathon BOB's were also quite notorious for being as smart as a lemming, and as annoying as flies. Always got in the way of your firing line, in your path, but at least it was always funny to hear their "THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!!" line. :P

The GT Bob's emulate their Marathon forerunners in being dumb as stump (and lets not forget wussy as well!). And I suppose that just like their predecessors, they also got more badass overtime (Each Marathon incarnation gave them more firepower to fight back, whilst GT Bobs become, well..... less wussy drivers overtime).

Here's the article about them: http://marathongame.wikia.com/wiki/BOB

Didn't really know about the 'Born On Board' thing. Used to mess with the Marathon engine a lot though, Mini-bobs FTW.

Bob his name you say...Hmmm?

My team has several names depending how they're performing. For ex: "Z.Gamble" Bob just spun out twice at Suzuka and managed to lose not only his lead, but burn the rears to shreds. I gave him several new names for his stellar driving... all probably outside of acceptable GTP language.

And after he so neatly curbed the S'es and caught the leader too...tsk, tsk.
Sigh...I shall have to punish him with the Fiat again.

"Some say that he's drawn to braking lights like a moth to a bug zapper... or that his ordinary Sunday dinner during childhood was a high octane fish soup... all we know is... he's called Bob!"

in Germany we call bob "Specki"
Specki is a name for fat people... Comes from Speck = bacon... which is in Germany not only used for describeing food but also used for the fat people have on their bodies...

I guess it is only because of nearly same sound of spelling than the "fat" background...

I hope this is understandable...

here some other suggestions:
b-spec bonkers
b-spec bloody stupid

I hope these words are not too improper... please let me know if.... dont wanna get "red card"..

Its actually an interesting question. I wonder if one guy on some forum called them "Bob" and from then on most people have called them that? Or, as if some sort of GT wildfire ran through the "mental kingdom", people en mass just started to call them Bob? All I know is that I first saw the whole Bob thing on GTP. At first I thought it was just a couple of people that had chosen the name but then I saw people start to refer to them collectively as "Bobs" :-). Is it a GTP thing maybe?
