not getting bitstream over HDMI

Hi, I just got a new reciever (onkyo 876) and have connected my PS to it with HDMI (optical previously) for some reason GT5P is now outputting LCPM over HDMI where it was outputting bitstream over optical:crazy:
The only option to switch between these two is in the BD/DVD settings, there is nothing is the game settings on the XMB or in the game.
Anybody else have this problem?
is GT5P equipped with HD audio formats maybe, so it defaults to those?

Why would you want to run bitstream? LPCM is the better quality standard AFAIK

Different rather than better.

Bitstream output = source sends the raw signal to the amp/receiver and the receiver then does the decoding.

LPCM output
- source does the decoding and then send the signal to the receiver which simply passes it onto the speakers.

Its simply a question of what end does the decoding, the source (in this case a PS3) or the amp/receiver.

The PS3 can't bitstream HD audio, and PCM audio (fully uncompressed) requires no decoding, so with audio over HDMI LPCM output is the best bet.

In answer to the OP's question, your set-up is working fine, the audio is 7.1 PCM (fully uncompressed) so LPCM output from your PS3 is perfect.

So GT5P puts out HD audio?
and it defaults to this when used with HDMI?

what if I want the amp to do the processing?

Unfortunately you can't have the amp do the processing with a PS3, I have an Onkyo 805 and was upset as well. The only way the amp can process a bitstream signal would be to buy a standalone Blu-ray player that bitstreams all codecs. Unfortunately I don't know which Blu-ray player does that.

What would be the advantage of having the amp process it as opposed to the PS3? I mean the PS3 is always getting updates - so surely it would be the better bet?

(Questions because I'm thinking of upgrading from my current Dolby Digital/DTS - capable amp.)

Technically you don't have to upgrade your amp since the PS3 does the decoding for you. For those people who don't use a PS3 to watch movies then they may need a receiver to decode the new lossless codecs that are found on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. The reason I upgraded my Sony ES to an Onkyo 805 was I wanted to go exclusively to HDMI and get rid of all my component, RCA, and optical cables.
