They do have the Nurburgring 24 hr race yearly run on both the Nordschleife and the current F1 track FWIW. Sports cars only, won by a BMW M3 GTR this year.

Is this race televised in the uk?

PS: Sorry if this is off topic but when is the Le Mans 24?

Yeah, I heard. When I first raced Nurburgring in GT4 I thought that I was racing on the F1 version. You can bet I wasn't a happy camper when it was the real thing.

The 24h Nurburgring are always exciting to watch.

I only could watch them on TV till now, but I'm hoping for a chance to go to the Ring next year. It is especially noteable that in one single race there are driving high horsepower race cars like the M3 GTR, two race prepped Vipers, many Porsches and then cars with not much horsepower, like Mini Coopers (the old ones) and diesel (!) Golfs.

Did anyone else notice the "Audi Playstation Team Oreca" Audi? Why did they have the Pescy as the playstation car in GT4 then? Is that who they sponsored last year? Also, I find it interesting that Team Oreca is running an audi in P1 class now where they used to dominate GT in Vipers back in the day. Not a Viper in the field now, shame :(

If I´m correct the Pescarolo is still sponsored by Playstation and so is the Oreca Auid( not sure but I think it is sony france or playstation france whos sponsoring them or SCEE if they arent the ones who are sponsoring the Pescarolo?),the reason they didnt have the Playstation sponsored Audi in GT4 was that the car was introduced in 05 and the game was already done.

The Volvo S60 turing car win their class this year. I think that they may have even beaten some *gasp* BMWs.

I was wondering also if it was shown here in the states.

While the Ring IS dangerous (and if you prefer the F1 circuit to the Nordschliefe, you need to hand in your racers membership card, pronto), my personal feeling with the rise of commercial interests in racing, they simply can't get enough cameras around the 'ring.

You've missed the 24 hour race for this year. I think there is a DTM race around there, though. They do two. One around the crappy F1 circuit, and one around the real thing.

I would pay money to see someone re-route the F1 cars onto the old circuit:) For those unaware, where you turn right onto the start/finish in GT4, if you went straight on instead, you'd join the F1 circuit. Then do a lap, then at the exact same spot, before the right hander onto the F1 start/finish, the track cuts back left onto the old circuit. Makes a lap of 16.2 miles I believe.

Mounting cameras all over the long Nordschleife course for an F1 race would be impractical, certainly, but that's not the only problem with having the race on that track. The other is practice time. The drivers could never get anything like what they needed to have to get even somewhat familiar with the track.

The race would be decided strictly by who knew the track best. If any of the F1 drivers had some previous experience on the track, they would have an overwhelming advantage. The rest would be tip-toeing carefully around, driving only to stay on the course, not to go fast. Most of the entrants would be pretty much just going through the motions.

No, they couldn't find a way to get track time before the race. There would be no time available for them to do that. Being an F1 driver is a 7-day-a-week job. Every hour of every day is booked already.

Theoretically it would seem that having a Grand Prix on the Nordschleife would be great. In reality, the racing would be lousy.

This isn't exactly a secret, you know... Anyone who follows motorsports knows the difference between the Nordschleife and the current FIA-approved Nurburgring that is in use this weekend for the Formula One European Grand Prix... :dunce:

nope, the DTM run on the F1 course instead. but running on the nordschliefe would be rather funky

I apologize. You're absolutely right! I was sure I read they raced there twice. Once on the F1, once on the Nordschleife. (I don't follow DTM that closely. Though that is probably obvious now :) )

As for racing current F1 there, it's not that hard to get to know the circuit. More and more now, there are stories of how a driver has never raced a circuit before, raced it in a game, and went out and did well. I've heard about Spa at least twice. I know the 'Ring like the back of my hand from driving it in GPL, SCGT and now GT4. (GT4 has BY FAR the best looking version.)

Is the Nurburgring 24h race going to be televised in America? Or is it only Europe?

Ya man. The nurburgring 24h race is televised in america.. im not sure when.. but its one hell of an event... LE MANS 24 IN 19 DAYS!!! :)

yeah jacques villenueve in his rookie year learned the montreal track (canandian grand prix) from playing video games he had no prior experience and he actually did quite well, games now a day act as real life simulator for some jobs, EG. Aircraft pilot Race car drivers. when is the nurg 24 televised i wanna see it!, i can just immagine myself there sitting on the couch naming every turn and staright as the cars take them lol just like in the le mans race. :dopey:

Just thought I'd share this with any one who's interested, at the end of Sky Sports "World Motor Sport" they said that next week is coverage from nurburgring 24 hours! :) :)

I had read somewhere that they Nordschl... the old Nurburgring is no longer used for Formula 1 racing because access to huge parts of the track is difficult - for emergency crews. Basically if a driver has a crash, and can't get out of the car, he has to wait too long for assistance. Also the narrow, bumpy and fast nature of the track with little run off area makes accidents more likely. It is also subject to very changeable weather, and you can have completely different conditions around the track. As far as I know, Niki Lauda's crash there in 1976 marked the last time a competitive F1 race took place on the old Nurburgring. If he had not been pulled out of the burning wreck by another driver, he would have died.

But maybe camera coverage is difficult too. If it's hard to cover with cameras, it might also mean it's hard to both provide decent vantage points for spectators, and to stop spectators from sneaking into all sorts of dangerous places.

Group C cars raced there at least until 1983 when Stefan Bellof set his all time lap record there, in a Porsche 956 I think, and I think it was about 6 minutes? I dunno how much longer the group C cars appeared at the old nurb. Fantastic track. It's a shame it can't be used, but a pleasure that it can still be driven!!
