Three men checked into a hotel room for which they paid $30. Each men split the cost, paying 10 dollars each. The next day, the manager realized that the men had been overcharged. She gave the bellhop $5 to return to the three men. On the way to their room the bellhop decided to keep $2 for himself, and give each of the three men one dollar. The three men had now paid $9 each, or a total of $27. This plus the $2 the bellhop kept makes a total of $29. What happened to the other dollar?

Thought someone would get a kick out of this.

This is one of my favorite riddles of all time, so I will not spoil it for any one....;)

I was wondering when this would turn up - I also know the answer (worked it out when it appeared in an e-mail, and had to spend an hour explaining it to a particularly thick work colleague) and won't spoil it.

It is a good one though.

I couldn't remember quite how it went. Thanks for posting, I too shall wait for someone to attempt an answer (:

They paid too much, got a fiver refund right? 3 bucks back to the 3 men made it 28 dollars, not 27, (from 25-26, 27, 28) and the bellhops 2 bucks. That makes 30 in my opinion. OOPS!! Did I spoil it? Sorry if I did.

Exactly! :) I was hoping someone would put this one to rest, I was beginning to think everyone was just going to post "I saw it before's" but never give an answer... ;)

I eventually had to explain it like this:

ME - you know how they said the room was $30?
HIM - yeah
ME - yeah, well it was $25, not $30
HIM - but it was $30
ME - no, it said they paid $30 - the manager realised they were overcharged $5 - it was $25
HIM - right..., but $25 isn't divisible by 3
ME - (rolls eyes)...

and you can imagine how it went from there for half an hour

I know. I'm smart, aren't I?
