And I was wondering what a good rally car is, I am currently looking at the following (I am not a big fan of the "special cars" but I tend to own one or two):

BP Apex Trueno GT '99
I heard it drifts well and the power output is around where I want.

Lancia Delta S4
It has good grip which is nice (Pingpong isn't THAT fun) and has great performance.

Lancia Stratos
A classic rally racing car, I heard its handling can be erratic which worries me.

Impreza WRX Coupe STi Type-R '98
Can be tuned pretty high (but not massively high) because of the turbo and it is difficult to spin out.

Any others worth looking at?

Never tried this but I'd suspect it's a loosey-goosey in those turns? Too much fighting with little to gain? That's what I'd suspect. It's a FR drivetrain. Might be fantastic in A and I-C races, but too difficult in I-B?

No. This one takes way too much mastery. Lots of power, but if you're not so good with controlling this one, it'll spin and and wreck just as easy as its real-life cousins did.

Yea, it is erratic, has a MR drivetrain, but it also starts with less power so there is hope. AGain, control is key.

Yes, this is a good way to go.

Any STi or Evo. Audis. All-wheel drive cars, basically, with racekits attached. I mean, I used a variety of cars back in my GT2 day. I managed to use completely civilian cars (with racekits attached sometimes) to finish all the rallies EXCEPT the Pike's Peak uphill battle against the Escudo. I needed to get my own Excuseo to finish this up. I used some front-drives like the Opel Astra to take care of easy stuff, and have no recollection of using any FRs, but it's possible I did. For the hard stuff, AWD is the way to go.

Also, according to the notes on my GT2 page, I had to use an actual race car to finish up the most challenging Tahiti Maze races, too. But for everything else it was the dealer-bought cars with race-kits attached.

Oh, and you'd think the Ford RS200 would be a good choice (was also in the Group B back in the '80s) but since it can't accept a race kit, it eventually has problems, especially over huge jumps where downforce won't force it back to the track easily enough.

Ford RS200, how could I forget this one...

Any STi or Evo. Audis. this is what I used to do, I am trying something different right now.
[edit, im not anymore, awd audi's for me]

AWD is the best platform but FF can the quite fun at times.

Also for the pikes peak battle I am using the cultis.

Gah, wasted 200,000 credits on a GTR that is too bloody heavy to race well (different race, gt allstars red rock valley)... new plan, Lister storm.

Just a quick heads up here, the BP Apex Trueno GT '99 isn't a rally car. Far from it, in fact. Ever heard of the Super GT series? It is a grand touring car race series that competes on circuits such as Suzuka and Fuji Speedway. Care to hazard a guess as to where the BP Apex Trueno GT raced? Super GT (called JGTC pre-2005). Therefore, it is a track racer, hardly suited to rallying. :)

Neither is the GT-R or Lister Storm. Both are circuit racers, just like the Trueno. Not really suited to rallying in anyway.

Please, please don't take a Lister rallying! :scared:

But, if you're willing to wait, I like the Escort Rally Car. The Xsara is a good, beginner-friendly rally car as well. I agree also that any of the Imprezas will make great dirt cars as well!

My question is why would anybody ask this question? Rallying in GT2 is kind of fun, but mostly an afterthought compared to road racing. Take any car you want, most with any power will be able to win most of the events, whether 4WD, FF, or FR. And obviously for Pikes peak you need one of the big two Suzukis.

the lister storm was for a different race
BTW I chose an audi TT, it works well, not the most owerful but it gets the job done.

I didn't realize you were considering the Lister for a road race... whoops! :dunce: Thought you meant the dirt. But either way, the Lister is a great road racer, but it has too much power to the rear wheels to be an effective rally machine. Also, it's a Lister - cars like that do not belong on dirt in my opinion...

yeah, the lister has a little too much power for me so I sold it, I am using the castrol supra and unisia gt-r. I am now looking for a good "kei" car. 💡

[update] I am getting the ford KA.

Suzuki alto works is a great choice, very light 4wd that creates solid performance both on tarmac and gravel, although Suzuki Capuccino, Honda Beat and Mazda AZ-1 seems to be saint trinity on tarmac and maybe even on gravel but whatever your choose it will be fun to drive. Money might be problem - you need to invest almost every part you have to create competitive car.

I got a KA, also money isn't an issue, I am already at the GT international race and have plenty of special events cleared (and own about 1,500,000cr). I did look at most of those cars though (other than the beat, I hate that thing).

As said, use an AWD car. When I first tackled GT2 way back in the day, I thought it would be cool to have a "two world warrior" as I dubbed it, basically a touring car, that will be competitive in rallying as well. I used the Audi A4 2.8L Quattro in race trim. I kept suspension settings for rally and road courses to help accordingly (race suspension obviously) and it was pretty good for what it was. I eventually got an S4 biturbo, but that was too powerful for the super touring car races.

If after putting the TT through its paces you're still looking for some rally fun, try a few of the FF's with race kit, especially around twisty Tahiti Maze. My favorites in the 1.6L category are the Pulsar, Tigra, and Punto. And in the 2L class the best seem to be Astra, Neon, Megane, and try even the 306 and Puma, Golf's good, too. FF rallies are known as Super 1600 and Super 2000, traditionally feeder/junior events to prepare drivers for 4WD WRC level competition.
