Yes, this thread is about Horse excrement, or manure.

And if you're abit of a towny you might want to leave now...

Basically, there's a stretch of road that is constantly littered with manure. It's a slight dip and bend in the road (are horse bowels sensitive to altitude change?) and has no pavement.

So in between jumping into drives to avoid being ran over by white van men I also have to dodge horse manure.

And yet it's a fine-able offence if your dog does it's business on public property, but horse riders get off without hassle. So I did some research...

Apparantely...
"This is something we often get asked when we are on patrol in city and town centres. Horse excrement is classified as biodegradable waste. There is a big difference between horse waste and dog waste. Dog excrement is toxic and contains bacteria, which are harmful to humans. There is no offence related to animal waste other than that produced by dogs. Horse excrement contains no such transferable diseases. It is environmentally friendly and can be used as a garden fertiliser with little or no preparation."

But here's the other problem. If I was to drop newspaper on the floor and be spotted by an officer I could be fined for littering. But paper is biodegradeable so how's that any different?

[/moan]

Yeah, I get especially pissed about people fussing over dog crap. It's one thing to have a Saint Bernard or something who poops thanksgiving dinners, but when your dog makes little more than a thumb-sized stronzito (the frogs and birds take bigger dumps than my dog), who really cares?

If your dog does it on my front lawn, believe me, I care.

I think we're talking about public property though. All poop fertilizes grass, anyway. All of my dog's turds in particular are gone the next day, and it's not because somebody picks them up.

Where I live which is quite countryside-ish we have horse **** everywhere along the roads, luckly its usually right in the middle of the lane so your car doesn't go over it, but it does kind of piss me off... luckily some people round here collect it with spades and use it to fertilize there plants and garden because apparently its grade A manure which costs quite abit to buy!

Oh well... I suppose horses are different to dogs, could you imagine having to scoop up and carry all the horses business!!!!!!! atleast the horse can carry it home I suppose!

I do because it's vile. I shouldn't have to walk around piles of crap on the pavement, it's your animal clean up after it. We get alot of dogs around our area and it's so annoying, especially as it quickly spreads over the whole of the pavement.

To me it's not alot different to leaving your own on the pavement.

On the pavement? Never! In the grass, man.

you'll rarely find dog poo splattered across your car either :sly:

but i'm with you on the horse thing. I live in a town full of pikkies and it seems them and their horses can leave their 'waste' anywhere they please, but its a £50 on the spot fine for my dogs....
wheres the sense in that?

Probably has something to do with the ancient days of using horses for, you know, basic transportation. How much commerce would actually get conducted if one had to constantly check the trail of one's mount and then assume responsibility for tidying up? And would you shake hands with someone who'd just ridden in, tied his horse to your rail, and come into your office?
Best to leave it lay, and let those whose place it is to do so take care of such business, or in their absence, count on the rain to come.

And I don't buy into the dog vs. horse unhealthy/healthy poop thing either. What about cats? The vilest substance known to science is emitted from the feline posterior (and then sold in McDonald's as sausage.)

All poop fertilizes grass, anyway. All of my dog's turds in particular are gone the next day, and it's not because somebody picks them up.

What is wrong with your dog? Does it blow away or what? I have never seen anything biodegrade in a day. It takes months at least.

My sis also says differently about the fertilization factor. Apparently, meat eater waste does not fertilize anything, which would explain that. But of course, she may be on a vegitarian anti-mean campaign.

Is this much of an issue, though? I know I live in a city, but to rural US roads really have horse poo all over the place. I know the country side smells bad, but I though the stuff was mostly confined to the farms/private property.

Back to town, I know we have pooper scoopers prowling the streets behind our horse carriages, but that may be just to keep the city clean.

Horses are herbivores, so what they eat is all natural, which is why it is not considered hazerdous. Dogs eat meat. Dog food contains animal bi-products. This is why it is harmful and not good for fertilizer. You never use anything that contains meat for fertilizer; except fish. Fish makes food fertilizer as well because it has a lot of nitrogen. What goes into the ground is what goes into the plant and there is risk that dog crap, or any other crap that comes from a meat eating animal, may contain something harmful to the plant which will eventually make its way into the environment.

Horse manure is not generally used for fertilizer, its usually cow.

Plus horse crap doesnt smell as bad as dog crap.

Paper takes longer than horse crap to degrade. I think that is why it would be a fine to throw paper on the ground. Not for any sanitary reason, but because it looks trashy.

Paper takes forever to biodegrade unless you shred it and put it in a compost heap.

+1 on the meat-eater versus plant-eater fecal matter. You're not supposed to use human feces as fertilizer, either, because it's potentially dangerous.

I don't mind seeing horse crap in the road. I know that's it's going to be gone in a few days as it dries out. Dog crap however usually hangs around. There's nothing worse than seeing dog crap every few hundred yards on a pavement. They need fines in place so every knows exactly what's expected of them.

If I did step in horse crap it wouldn't really bother me. Dog crap is usually sticky, stinks and is gets in every groove of a trainer. When you step on horse crap it's just like treading on a pile of wet grass.

Any kind of poo is unsanitary, but dog and cat poo can lead to serious health problems, especially for pregnant ladies.
My last post may have been a bit sarcastic, but any poo is, well just poo! specially when stepped in.
I have 3 dogs, fed on barf (which is pure meat strate from the cow) no additives but it doesnt disappear in a day!

cats are a pain in the rear end, i hate weeding to find a pile of poo!

but, if you have to clear up after the dog, you should clear up after the horse too, we're not in the 18th century now...

Pikkies aside, you'll probably find that the people who make the laws, or at least have a lot of influence over those who make the laws, are the very same people who are likely to be found on the back of a horse. Why else do you think it took so long before something as barbaric as fox hunting got banned?

There is also the problem of how the rider would clean the crap up. They can't get off the horse and start shovelling it into bag, especially if they are on a road. They can't come back later as it would have already been run over by a car.

Cat poos worst because they always find a long bit of grass to put it in, and when mower meets cat crap....

Also I hope you kill the cow first, or do you just have half eaten cows walking around the back garden?

Our cows are like our drivers.....

I get the carnivore thing but...

My crap probably smells better than some dog crap, does that make it 'healthier'?

Paper doesn't take forever to download if you leave it out in the open and open to rain and wind.

This horse crap has been here a week...

Stuff on the side still looks fresh!

But it's true that it's not as annoying as dog crap in terms of getting stuck in your shoe, but it is really slippery in the wet, and it does stick in your shoes abit. And any animal crap coming into my house is too much animal crap.

Not when there are plenty of insects who love to eat turds. Like I said, the frogs here make bigger turds than my dog does. They're completely gone in a week.

Bit concerned now guys....
we're sat here discussin which excrament sticks to you feet most under different conditions.....
Was it an official experiment to test this out? with variables kept continuous?
come on!!!!!

I could easily find some dog, horse, cow and sheep droppings. Maybe cat and perhaps Fox.

However, I don't have enough "control" shoes to make it a fair test :dopey:

Fox poo is far more disgusting that either cat or dog poo, really nasty, sticky, stinky stuff. Always great if your dog (or in my case my dads dog) likes to roll around in it, not the brightest of dogs this one.

Still that pales into insignificance when compared to a babies first poo, black stinky tar like substance, the by product of amniotic fluid, hair and all other manner of goodies.

I can comment that nothing on Earth even remotely smells as bad as baby poo... at least, my kid's poo smells like the sewage station we visited on our high school field trips oh so many years ago.

RE: Paper... depends on the type. Some paper takes forever to biodegrade... especially if it's the good kind. Simple poster paper doesn't last that long.

Baby poo is worse when the 'offending' baby is a vegetarian. Then when they are walking around whilst having recently done a 'poop' and suddenly sit down very quickly and hard, well you can imagine what happens (though you might not want to).

the kind of nappy where the poo spreads up the back is worse cos it just stops the 'usual' cleaning process of lying the baby on its back t ochange its nappy.
:ill: :scared: :ill:

Yes, the kind that 'escapes' the nappy and spreads all up the back of the romper-suit (and always happens at about 2o'clock in the morning), always a joy to clean up.

I'm so glad those days are now well past.

:)

i'm not in the city.....

i live surrounded by rivers and fields. cows and horses. but seeing as we've not just 'stuck' to horse poo anyway, what does it matter? poo, ****, excrement. isnt it all the same, just full of different smells and c**p!
