Online Abuse (NSFW)

I play a game or two online, namely Counterstrike and Unreal Tournament. Lately I have been watching people chat online. I have been thinking about how many people really let themselves loose online with the verbal abuse, from yelling, to rascism, to sexual harassment, etc.

I think it needs to be stopped or somehow kept down to a minimum. I really hate it when I finally see a girl playing counterstrike and then some little boy is like "come on, let me just put the head in... where do you live?" or etc. Girls in those online games really get some bad sexual harassment, the kind that if you heard it next to you in the office, you'd hear police sirens a few minutes later.

Same goes for rascism. I can't tell you how many times I've read the word ******, jew, faggot, etc oniline. The word "noob", nub, newb, etc, are all words that I'm starting to really get tired of reading as well.

What do you think about online chatting/gaming/both and "verbal" abuse? I hope that soon somewhere down the line, your typing will be just as important as your speaking, and anything you type can be treated as if you spoke those words. Someone harasses you to no limit? Get their IP adress, log it, and report it to the police, thats the state I hope to see on the interenet soon.

there arent always admins on those servers, and sometimes even if there is one, they only have the power to start a vote on whether to kick them or not.

Ahh man there was a penny arcade comic a while ago that summed up this situation.

Some of the servers I play on have swear filters that allow the mods to limit what words are used. Also many games have a mute function where if a person is being blatent enough you can just stop recieving messages from them. Most of time I only notice racism if it's over a mike, I don't really pay attention to text much.

I don't know about chat rooms or mirc though.

Don't be bothered by it. People who do that aren't worth your time anyway. What annoys me more in counterstrike source are admins who suspect me of cheating and ban me, while I'm an honest player... hell I'm not even good at the game, I just use my brain when I play.


When cursing and using racist language online people just hide behind their anonymous username, they wouldn't say things like that to you in real life. As a matter of fact, the people who do that online probably are the ones getting bullied / made fun of in real life.

Ah, to the opinion of online abuse. Some say that it should be banned and when someone feels bullied, it should be reported to cops.

The other side says these same people that commit online abuse are being bullied in real life.

So my opinion? It is wrong and that they should be banned from getting back on that server.

I can get pretty bad playing Halo 2 and Forza with language. In Forza when someone rear ends me and I have a good run going they get a good piece of my mind and in Halo 2 when my team is playing like crap I swear outta frustration.

I never resort to racial slurs though because it doesn't matter were you're from....if you're a bastard I'll let you know.

Exactly, there are many other ways to flip a **** on someone without being an asshole.

I only get annoyed when an opponent starts cheating, like in racing games. Cutting up, bad driving, Nudging. But it never gets verbal, I just beat them. I would probably swear when playing footie games, recieving profesional fouls or just plain crappy/late tackles.
