Untrue. Only in very rare circumstances does taking a harder compound to avoid a pitstop gives you any kind of advantage.

You're right about that. Even in a 24 hour race, you don't gain anything on running longer stints. You actually get punished twice:

1: Because the softer compounds simply outperforms the harder compounds by more than what a pitstop costs.

2: Because refueling can be done while changing tires, which means that each time the car with softer compound pits in to change tires, he can also take on 10-15 liters of fuel for free, which means that he can delay the pit stop where he will do the main refueling. So while the car with harder compound may need to refuel every 20 laps, the car with softer compounds may only need to refuel every 25 laps, because he gets some fuel every time he change tires.
 
People who drive around a track in the wrong direction, there's just not enough room on my blocked list to cater for all them noobs.
