Online Play

I've heard from several sources that the online play is very laggy and hence unplayable.

Can anyone confirm this before I bother purchasing this game? Is online smooth enough to play efficiently or not?

As with all online games, it entirely depends on your connection and the connections of the people with whom you're racing.

Your mileage may vary, as they say.

It's not unplayable, if it does ever reach that kind of lag you will most likely be disconnected from the server along with everyone else in that race and that rarely happens.

It's no more laggy then any other game, but the problem is you can't select a local server to join so much of it depends on who the game selects to be host.

How far away they are and how good their connection (other players and host)

I have a lowsy connection, and playing games like GTAIV, Tiger Woods and Midnight Club LA online is a right pain in the backside and sometimes not playable at all. GT5 on the other hand is very good, you might get some relatively minor lag but nothing's perfect.

Come on really this is BS GT5P Has the worst Online with lag EVER on PS3 .(fanboys)
Stick to offline my friend.

So what, other people's experiences can be dismissed offhand because they don't agree with yours so they're "fanboys"?

I get most lag with LittleBigPlanet - but since that's Peer-to-Peer, this isn't a surprise... The other games I play - GTA4, CoD4 and GT5P - are all much of a muchness, depending on my latency at the time and how many people I'm playing with. 4 people on GTA4 is usually better than 15 people on GT5P, but 5 people on GT5P is usually better than 10 on GTA4.

Bottom line is that, in my experience, GT5P is no worse than any other game. But...

Quite honestly I RARELY have any lag issues with GT5P.

I agree with Daddy here. The only time I have had trouble was with one GTP member who was constantly host in events, which caused lag otherwise it is perfect pretty much all the time.

If you use wireless then it can be laggy at times(but only a little). If you use wired then you will have better connection and lagg less races. And if u use wireless and you become the host, then the race fails at start(it does for me)

Lag wise, GT5P is one of the best games I have ever played. There is virtually none in the game. I used to be wireless, and even then had little to no problems.

Maybe you should check your connections, if you always have problems.

You can also check my YouTube-channel, and those over hundred online-racing videos if you dont believe that GT5P online works very fine. There is also few 'laggy-races' just for example... and always the Host is from another side of earth, so I think that lagging is quite understandable in those cases.

My cable-DSL is 5mb.

I don't really think it's unplayable, sometimes I witness a bit of lag but you can still play the game fine. Just depends on the hosts connection I guess.

It use to be laggy with SPEC I and II
Now we have Spec III its much stable now. So don't worry it is very playable , as well you can get close enough to another car without any major lag problems.

I think you're the one with the problem because Prologue is very good (rarely lags) on my slow speed 0.5Mb, wireless connection. When was the last time you tried online? How many times did you try it? It is true that performance has horrendous at launch time (for me) and has improved greatly since.

Also, calm down with your wild / inaccurate accusations.

I personally find online better than offline in ways of lag... I regulary get into 12 car races with zero lag or close to zero...
