Online play

First post actually hey guys!

First of all I need some help, I had my first online race today after smashing out some decent lap times offline. Anyway the race gets going 2 guys overtake me into turn 1 fair and square faster car, then some nob head shunts me into the barrier from behind and I get a collision penalty? Is there a way I can play without collisions or just with normal people who enjoy racing by the rules?

Secondly, I want to get my name on the online rankings using tuned cars but I can't figure out how. I just want to do a single time trial with my nicely set up S2000 but this doesn't look possible unless I'm just not pressing the right buttons!?

Any help for a GTP rookie would be appreciated!
Dan

Hi Dan, welcome at GTPlanet!

Unfortunately we don't have private rooms yet, so you have the chance of running into people who race by their own rules. If you look in the race events section, you'll notice people set up their own events that start at specific times. This way the quality of the grids improves since the chances are high that you end up in the same race if you enter the race at the same time.

Regarding your second point, it's only possible to get your name on the online rankings by entering arcade time trial. No leaderboard is available for cars that have a modified setup or altered power points.

Enjoy your stay here and hope to see you at the track 👍

play expert events. Standard physics events are prone to shunting and blocking

That^

EDIT: Also its best, most of the time, to just go ahead and let everyone get to that first corner first, that way not only can you avoid the first attempts of getting rammed, but also you can remember the names of the annoying ones.

Hey thanks for your replies! I'll see how it goes, i might just have to grin and bear it. Let's hope GT5 has more control over race rules!

:)

I like that suggestion, as I practice that too! And yes, stick to the expert online events as most punters avoid the physics.

And I hope the physics in GT5 dissuades most of the punters 👍

If it was set up like Live For Speed online, that would be perfect IMO. Get within a server, (but wouldnt allow driving on track if you werent there for start of current race. And then if someones punting around in that server, everyone vote and bam banned from server. Simple

Lately I've been running into just as much of that in expert events. I really don't know how people think you're going to run ten laps with them at Suzuka after they've knocked you off the course...but they do.

Get used to the bumper cars. Occasionally you will find a group of drivers that drive realistically, but even in expert events there is a lot of bumper car driving. Until events can be made private or you do 2P races, you will often run into someone driving like the road is a big ping pong table. Learn the ways that you can defend though. Don't let them squeeze into the inside of you in turns. This is how they hit you and YOU get the penalty. If someone is hitting you and tailgating you, slam on the breaks and they will get a ramming penalty. Leave them in the dust and move on after that. GT5 should really get rid of this to a decent degree with the damage modeling, or at least with more extensive penalty systems and/or event restrictions. Cross your fingers.

I would advise against the tailgating part. I've raced people before who thought I was tailgating them so they brake checked me. But I was just much faster then them waiting for an opportunity to pass cleanly(on eiger of course).

I agree with you, so perhaps my point wasn't made clear. I stated that if someone is hitting you AND tailgating you, slam on the brakes. In other words, if they are not just close behind, but actually tapping you. When I race I tailgate people a lot because it often is more effective than passing. Most people make a mistake when getting pressured and its safer to pass after they get rattled or skid off the road. But some people keep nudging you because they are waiting to ram you off the road once you go into a turn. They know that if they have too much space or speed between themselves and the car in front of them, they will just ghost out before impact so they start nudging you before you hit the turn. They know all the tricks, but so do I.

I just wanted to add that it helps if you keep track of organized race events and times.

Last night for instance I couldn't sleep so I decided to try a couple of races. I went to the HSR and after a couple of FTC I got on and was thrilled there were about 12 racers.

As we are lining up I notice that everybody is at 549 pp and I'm at 599, then at the start everybody dives down for what looks like a pace car start.

So I just try to stay out of everybody's way and still try to have fun which I did by just watching golfpro's driving line.

Then I went to change my PP's to 549 and I again join a race and right away I see that everybody is at 600 pp"s. Now I'm just getting blown past.

This morning I see there were 2 different events and I got them all mixed up.

Bottom line, next time I will try to keep an eye on the events and the clock.

Good racing and drive clean.

Jim

Ohh sorry, I miss read the AND part. But yes the tapping and bumping when following is unexceptable. Tailgating on the other hand is a useful tactic.

Starting a race at 0:00 or 0:30 at any hour, using the clock in the Prologue online event screen is usually a good bet
