Online racing for rookie

What's the best race for rookies? I don't know anything about tuning. I don't just finish last online - everyone else's laps are 5-10 seconds faster. I'm a very casual gamer. I play probably once or at most 2x a week.

Maybe I should use the assists when i'm racing online? Offline I like the challenge of not using them. I've been racing the class that doesn't allow you to use custom tunes. I assumed that would at least level the playing field.

Maybe I should download a really good tune for a certain car and stick to a specific car? Any recommendations?

I was in the same boat when I started on line a month or so ago, I race just F class in the public lobbies. After a while I started meeting the same racers over and over and soon was being offered tunes, cars and advice. I am now running with the leaders more often than not with no assists. Join a good club, this will give you access to another level of help and the club garage. Above all practice, some of these guys are on every day and know the tracks and best lines like the back of their hand.

Send me a friend request on Xbox Live. I'll gift you some tunes and run some online races with you...I'll try to help you out as best I can. :)

Friend request sent.

I followed you guys advice and I did much better. I picked an F class car and bought the most popular / highest rated tunes. I managed times much closer to the drivers. Finished one place better than last in one race. :D

Now I need to learn the race lines. I also need to work on my own tunes. I'd rather have the hp than the handling. Crazy but it's more fun to finish last in a close race online than to finish 1st every time against the computer.

What are some of your favorite cars to race with? Tell me 2 or 3 cars you like and I'll work on some tunes for you...and I'll send over some lobby tunes that I like to use myself when I get a chance.

I'll take any of your best F or E class tunes. I guess I prefer hp over handling.

Thanks!

Man after my own heart, it is about having fun and a great race with another driver is a great race regardless if it's for first or last. Glad to hear your getting there. My favorite ride is a civic that corners on rails, I lose a little on the straights but love sneaking down the inside on corners:D
For speed tracks I pull out the Lotus and as long as no one hits it too hard and I get it round the corners, there is a good chance she is up there with the front runners...of course there is an equal chance I end up facing the wrong way LOL

I find rivals mode and chasing specific times to be a much more fun experience than racing against players online. Maybe try that.

I didn't get a friend request from you. Did you send it to Teewiggs?

Oh I sent it to the wrong person. I'll do it next time I'm on xbox.

Update - I'm doing much better now. I'm usually with the pack. I've even won a race or two. The hardest thing for me is keeping a good line when I'm ahead. I can't tell you how many times I've been in the lead and got nervous. Also, I've learned if there are a whole bunch of people racing, I can wait for a wreck in a tight corner and then pass a bunch of cars.

My favorite races are the ones that are really tight from beginning to the finish. (usually with less racers)

I'm still learning the protocol for passing. Even when the racer ahead of you brakes excessively for a turn, I can't always pass. I'm forced to brake as much as him/her to avoid contact. Of course the people behind me don't always grant me the same courtesy.
