Online - Using Driving Line? Other assists?

I've just had FM3 for a week. When I race onine I'm using a wheel and driving from the cockpit view no assists except for ABS.

Well, I was DNF and at the bottom every race. I was 10 seconds per lap slower than the leaders. I couldn't figure out how everyone seemed to know the tracks so well. FM3 hasn't been out long.

I've never used driving lines in racing games but I decided to give it a try. Well, that changed everything. Today I was competitive and came in 2nd and 3rd on a few races. (Led one race until I got bumped)

It's dynamic so it tells you when you you're going too fast. That's a huge advantage because without it it's hard to figure out if you're going too fast.

So, is everyone using the driving line or some other assist?

Most people have the driving lines memorized, so they disabled them. I have the driving lines disabled as well.

Once you spend a bit more time learning your driving lines, you will be right up there with them.

I only use ABS. How well I do usually depends on the track. If it's Suzuka or Tsukuba, I can usually kick some serious butt. Probably my worst track would be Road America. I really ought to practice it some more...

The driving line is a pretty big advantage unless you know the track back to front. Even if you know a track really well, if you drive it in a car you dont know it normally takes a while to learn the best braking points, knowing where you have to ease off the throttle or where you can go flat out. The driving line takes the learning curve from hours to minutes.

It's definitely a useful tool. I used it once (offline) to win on New York with chicanes in an A Class race. Just too hard to see those things well, even on an HDTV, nothing but trouble without the racing line, and the bots were blowing past me.

I turned the line off from the start and been following the AI's braking mostly, while adjusting myself. Against the AI it works. Now I need to try it online :P

I keep meaning to go around Sedona with the racing line on it's such a hard track to find the right line. But usually I prefer to have it off because I think it's the most unrealistic assist apart from the "autodrive".

ABS and I gotta admit I'm now using the braking line when allowed :guilty:. As noted above it just allows one to have a consistent reference point for breaking points, especially when using unfamiliar vehicles or racing unfamiliar tracks. I used to be a stickler about not using it but have succumbed to its siren song. On the light side since F3 released I have forced myself to drop the auto tranny and now row the gears all by my lonesome :D.
