I'm sure you've heard of him, Iron Maiden guitarist Janick Gers. If you haven't, here's a few examples of his handy work...

Personally I think he's the best guitarist in Maiden just because of his awe-inspiring stage presence and energetic performances. I also love the way he can pick up guitars and just 🤬 the 🤬 out of them, absolutely incredible.

What's your personal opinion on him?

Love all 3, Dave and Adrian included. My favorite work by Janick is that solo for Holy Smoke...that gives me chills. Then Dave kicks in later but yeah that is amazing.

Oh the other one I like is the Ghost of the Navigator solo, with the riff he wrote following it.

Personally, I think he's a bit widdly woddly. He has excellent stage presence and I like the added depth of the three guitar harmonies, but my favourite of the three is Adrian.

Make no mistake about it though, Janick is probably the most proficient of the three and he was great with Gillan, but sometimes I wish he'd slow it down a bit.

I really like Janick's playing style, it works very well on Brave New World but like F1 Fan, Adrian is probably my favourite of the three. All three are brilliant guitarists. Janick also has a lot of faith in his strap, have you seen what he does! The sort of thing that if the strap broke you'd be shouting 🤬!!!!

Being the huge Maiden fan that I am I have to say that Janick is a heck of a player, but I agree with the concensus so far in that Adrain is probably the best. Listen to Somewhere in Time to see why.

He pretty much wrote the entire album.

Can I just point out that I don't own Somewhere in Time, which sucks. :ouch:

My god, that is considered by far their best album, if not THE best album of all the albums ever made (which they managed that with Live After Death, considered by many critics to be the best live album to have been ever made). It's like the only album to ever get consistent 10/10 ratings...

What about Brave New World for best album! or Seventh Son...?

I guess I'll have to buy it on iTunes then.

Seventh Son is one of their best IMO, especially The Evil That Men Do. 👍

Forget those two. Powerslave ftw.

But then again Aces High and 2 Minutes to Midnight is also just as good...

Yes those are great but Somewhere in Time is just so amazing. The song writing my not be the strongest but it's how good all the synth mixes in, and the fact there is no keyboards involved makes my jaw drop.

And Powerslave and the Rime of the ancient mariner.

Rime of the Ancient Mariner, if you don't love it you're not a Maiden fan. ;)

Just buy the album off CDWow!!! ;) Cheap and free shipping.

In Seventh Son I'd say the Title Track, Infinite Dreams and The Prophecy are the best.

Rime of the Ancient Mariner!!!!!

Maiden has changed a lot throughout their career. Throughout the 80's they got a bit more atmospheric and then in 1990 they tried going back to the first style. Then when Blaze came along, from there onwards they have been more Progressive Metal, which is more my area.

Personally, my favourite era was the "Paul DiAnno" era, but early stuff with Bruce was great. One thing though, Powerslave >>>>>>>>>>>>> Somewhere in time.

Purely my opinion.

I take it the opposite. I love both to death but if I had to favor one or the other I'd pick Somewhere in Time.

To be honest my least favourite eras are the Di Anno era and 1990 to 1992. Maiden just isn't complete without an Air Raid Siren to complete the group, Bruce was there early 90's but wasn't using his voice properly, too sort of raspy. Thought the Blaze era had some good songs.

Never really cared for Di Anno myself, he had some OK songs but I like Bruce the most of the 3. Blaze had a few good songs but again Bruce makes them sound like what they should sound like. I do like most of the early '90s with Bruce's raspy voice too...IDK I just like all Maiden. Wasting Love was probably one of the best songs out of them in the '90s, with Holy Smoke, Fear of the Dark, 2 A.M., Sign of the Cross, Be Quick or Be Dead and Judas Be My Guide. Best album out of the '90s was Fear of the Dark hands down, was probably the last album until early 2000's that had strong song writing.

The song writing in The X Factor (Whose name has been horrifically used for an annoying show :grumpy:) sounded empty, that was when they started needing three guitarists. Also from the 90's, The Educated Fool, The Clansman, Judgement of Heaven and The Unbeliever were excellent too. But then came Brave New World, not a single low point on the album.

And now GTP has Christmas lights!!!! :D

I would say the string of albums from Powerslave to SSOASS is one of, if not, the best string of three albums ever done. Throw in Live After Death and you seal the deal. The thing about Adrian is his solos are composed rather than improvised like most. Wait...this is a Janick thread, not an Adrian thread  While many people will disagree, I don't think Maiden ever put out a bad album. While X Factor and Virtual XI were not what there predecesors or successors were, they are still solid albums with solid playing by Dave and Janick. Edge of Darkness, The Clansman, Sign of the Cross and Futureal are my favorites from that era.

As for the DiAnno Era....Self Titled, Killers, and Maiden Japan are all awesome. Just have to download the Soundhouse Tapes.

Yeah, that's the amazing thing about Adrian's playing. he also does some improv on stage in the Death on the Road DVD. In songs like Journeyman, and Wildest Dreams (sort of). Maiden has never put out a bad album, that's why I said least favourite, not worst. ;) Having constant good albums is an amazing feat. The only bands I can think of that have never put out a bad album are Maiden, and Dream Theater. Maybe Edguy.

What about Donington '92? Love that concert, especially when Adrian comes out for Running Free. 👍

To be honest I haven't heard it. Don't listen to much live albums, because if you buy a live CD, you're buying songs you already have but usually not as good and with less quality.

Aside from Live After Death of course..I may have to make a new general Iron Maiden thread as this going rather off-topic.

Live After Death was...and still is...considered the best live album ever made. Death on the Road comes as a close second for me.

I much prefer Rock in Rio, my personal favourite. Because it's on the Brave New World Tour (sort of) so they played over half the album on it. Which is like heaven for me. :D
