Every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, I have to run a few miles for Lacrosse Conditioning. Afterwards, if I go running, my shins feel as though they are going to snap! Does anyone know any solutions to this problem?

Heating pad afterwards.

Before the run sit in a hot tub or have some kind of hot water running over your legs to loosten the muscles up? Not too sure.

I assume you're running on a hard surface. Try running on grass or something. Basically it's your muscles burning because of the jolt of hitting hard ground and tearing at them.

I'm wearing some Nike running shoes, and just normal socks. My shoes are about 3 months old, but they have only been used for walking before conditioning started.

Mmm... were they properly fitted to your running style? That's really important.

They might be taking a while to break in - I've got two pairs of the recent (blue and yellow trim) Asics Al-Kayanos, and that model for some reason take about 100km to break in.

What do you mean by running stlye?

Alright, I just did some research, and talked to a few of my running friends. They all pointed in the same direction... I think they called them Shin Splits or something like that. They told me it was because I wasn't stretching, but what do my shins have to do with stretching, plus, the whole team doesn't stretch and they don't have that problem.

Whether your feet roll in or out. Most people roll in - i.e. they strike the ground with the outside heel, and roll their foot in so as the foot comes back off the ground the last contact is the inside front of the foot.

I'm surprised it's shin splints - your miles didn't sound anywhere near enough to be shin splints. They're easily healed - just stop!

The shin splints is just what my friends thought it was, and they aren't the smartest guys in the world, if you know what I mean.

Shin splints...ouch....My wife gets those. I feel sorry for you if that's it. She use to get in so much pain she had to stop running. Now she does a stair climbing machine.

Shin sore comes about when you aren't used to running for the distance/time. It's a common problem, tough it out, it will dissapear after a while.

Hmm... shin splints! That surprises me too-- I didn't get shin splints until several months into the Cross Country season.

If I recall correctly (do please tell me if I'm wrong), shin splints are caused by lactic acid build-up in the shins, and lactic acid buil-up can generally be remedied by stretching (it helps "de-clog" it, per se).

Always stretch after a run, no matter if it's short or if you don't feel tired or have tight muscles-- stretching always, always helps, unless of course you do it with cold muscles. :D

I just talked to the coach, and he said that it happens when you're not used to running, which I'm not. He said, that stretching, should help it out, so youth_cycler hit the nail on the head. As for the stretching part, nobody really stretches before or after a run, so I guess I should start. Thanks for all of the help guys!
