For a while, sanctioning bodies did not allow carbon-fibre composite monocoque chassis in competition and that meant for The Zonda, a car which was hugely that, would not be able to compete in any series. However, the international racing's governing bodies finally stepped up and allowed carbon fibre chassis in GT-racing at the start of the 2003 season and that opened the door for an unofficial Zonda Race car: The Pagani Zonda GR. Long time GT-racing team Carsport America took a Zonda and through its Carsport Modena arm, developed and built the race car. Most of the Zonda's features were intact, the drivetrain being the only different component. The AMG derived V12 was decreased in size to displace six litres. It featured a Porsche 911 derived gearbox unit, which was mounted reversed and upside down. Further modifications include minimal changes to the bodywork to have it comply with the regulations.

This would be a wonderful addition to GT as its is THE first attempt at creating a competition Zonda and perhaps inspired the official Zonda R.
