PD servers are GARBAGE!!!!

Ping is a very small measure of…anything. If you’re seriously expecting single-player level of game performance with 16 players across the Internet, you fail to realize this is a limitation of technology available on the PS3. Just the theoretical capabilities over the Internet are problem enough. This is true of any game.

Ok, so the ping appears to be ok. How is the ping stability, does it remain at 50 or is it jumping all over the place? How is the connectivity? Ever experienced packageloss, or an inconsistant data stream?

Is there any other game you had problems with playing online? Even those "WTF" moments could be an indicator for a problem with the connection. Like: "omg i should have killed him, but he is still at 100% life." Things like that could be a problem with the other player, but it might aswell be related to your connection.

Upload is an important factor for peer-to-peer connections, how is the upload with your connection and the connection of your teammates?
You could analyse it here:
http://www.speedtest.net/

I think you have allready done this but your teammates should also do it.

I gotta agree, my internet is great but come on this game & cant even play in a lobby with 16 people without any lag. PD really need to do someone.

Yes, a lot has to do with your INTERNET but, I the two rooms running the same race last night we had 6 out of 18 kicked from the servers. Last Sun I was hosting race that 4 got kicked from the room. It all got bad after the last downtime. :(

Why not just call a Spade a Spade? GT5 online is essentially a crap shoot without control over what region or connection type the players you play with are. Unless you have the luxury of living in an geographical area heavily populated with GT5 players, your going to struggle to find a stable and populated lobby. Played all night in a full lobby with a host from Arizona and was fine. This guys room is generally fine. Trying to comb through the lobby system, Hit or Miss. Tried to practice/join a league in a room with three internationals and an east coaster and nothing but problems. A crap shoot I say.

The net result, however, is that people with crap connections ruin it for everyone else. You get 14 guys from your street playing and you get no more than 0.02s of lag. Guy 15 joins and he's from Indonesia. Suddenly you're all having to send data to him as well - 15 lots of 0.1s round trips - and your lobby goes to hell.

Hahaha.. sad but true

We have relatively low connection here (compared to the rest of the world), but full house of private lounge are doing well if we just race among friends within the country. Joining regional lobby (South East Asia) also working good.

Now, trying to connect to US /EU host there's still a slim chance for good connection. But most of it will be lag and hurting the players there.

And it's proven the other way around. Hosting an open lobby with regional players no problem, one european mate joining, and the result is bang :banghead: Well not always, but most of it do.

Some observation about lag: If you see one car jumping around, than he /she's lagging. But if you see everybody is jumping around (check your map) then it is you.

"Jumping around" is pretty mild lag, I've seen some awesome things that literally had me in hysterics in the middle of a race. Cars humping other cars brutally, even crashing down on top of them repeatedly; cars wheelie-ing at mach 10 past the entire field, only to regress back to where it "should be" and do it all over again in reverse, sending other cars flying in the process (of course, they almost immediately return to their initial heading) etc. Excellent stuff, really. Not exactly great for racing, but still... :dopey:

Yeah but I buy the car knowing this already. Again this is a feature that is advertised by PD, 12 and under cars in a room is good so they should have made it 12 maybe, I don't know.

I do have to thank you for all the information you've giving us for at least understanding what is going on and why we probably can't get good consistent room quality.

It's so weird that I can join a shuffle race that goes on for 4-6 hours with players ranging from 12-16 from all over the place (USA, England) and it will be perfectly fine. But during a league we struggle.

Arrgh, it's called heavy traffic. When networks start getting stressed you will see all sorts of issues arise. Also ISP come into play as well, I have friends on my list that are from all over the the US and a few in Aus, we play without lag with up to 12 players. We tend not to run beyond 12 because it increases the chances of issues arising from strained network traffic on anyone's ISP at any given time. Surprising we can run rooms and no one really lags and if they do, they promptly leave the room and come back in order to sort it out. I can't say that when racing my friends have such issues online. Earlier in the year some people would be online in the same room and can't see one another and they would both have differing grid orders. Was due to ISP issue or something of that nature, so I guess PD had to do some internal rewriting. But GT5 is PD's first fully online capable game and it has serious teething problems but it's still an awesome first time out. Let's hope PD keeps working on streamlining their netcode, one can only hope...I'm too busy waiting for the update to land.

If you would have read you would know my ping. I have all 2011 network equipment. It's not me, I guess it's other bad connections. It's stupid to enter a lobby, qualify, quick tune then get lag 2 seconds into the race. Time killer.
No, I wasn't replying to you. Didn't you see the quote I replied to? My bad.

With the video, I'm not saying your internet speed is slow, more like the problem likely isn't the fault of the servers'. My PS3 is in the basement, router 2nd floor and the speed isn't high, less than 5mb. It's unusual for me and many others as it's not common at all that we experience your online play problems.

👍 very well said

That, it does. I'm not denying it. It's just that it doesn't really affect my online play, at least, not since the start of GT5.

When playing an online game with 12-16 players, you usually can't simply say: this is the cause of the problem, as there are too many variables involved. On your end there's GT5 (yes, it has bugs!), there's the PS3, there's, PSN, there's your router and/or modem, there's all your cabling (or wireless), there's your ISP and all their equipment/cabling, the peers they are connecting to etc. etc. And that's just your own end, multiply it by the amount of players to get the number of points where it can go wrong. ;)

From personal experience I can say that GT5 online is really, really stable when playing with a group of people who are not to far away. The only bugs I have seen so far is getting kicked from your own room (even when you are the only one in there, so that definitely shouldn't be a network issue), the room browser showing stale data (e.g. I know one of my mates just switched to a different room because they have just told me, but the game still shows the old room, even if you refresh, and of course, if you try to connect it will fail).

Their error codes could be a bit more descriptive (if they can show 'error 123456789' they can also show 'cannot connect to port x' or something like that) and there should be cancel buttons on their essential networking stuff, instead of just waiting indefinitely for a connection/response. And their non-essential networking stuff should run in the background instead of blocking the whole UI. I believe most people are frustrated because there is no way out if it fails and they have no clue as to what is going on.

I am based out in Italy, and race mainly with UK guys. In terms of speed my connection is average, 7 down 0.50 up and a ping of around 30ms. I am one of the guys in my group that has minimal problems tho I do get loading bars for the same few guys from time to time.

Sometime during the Day, I often race with a regular bunch of japanese guys who are on my FR , in both private and open lobbies. I never see Lag with there cars and equally I do not lag for them as far as I am aware. Mostly 8-12

There is a hell of allot of factors at play, on Both PD, ISP and the indiivduals end.

The appeal of console gaming has always been the plug and play aspect. PC gaming is and has always been for the more tech savvy gamer. BUt owning a console now requires quite a bit of network understanding for many who want a good online experience.

Sony should start perhaps by selling a PS3 certified router all ready set up and ready to go. That will elminate the router incompatability probs between people which are probably half the problems. Along with that there should be tips and a guide to help people get the best online gaming experience. Many people that play online will often have numerous phones on there wifi, PC on, Laptop on, GF watching youtube vids etc. All of which does not help.

Despite all of the precautions we take within my club, advise and help members with there connections etc, we still get problems.

I've been having this problem since the first update(2.0, I believe)....kicks me off the network into the lobby, telling me that i have been disconnected, then some times it'll say "entry was refused due to network incompatibility with room host" I'm hard-wired, changed to static ip address and port forwarded my ps3 with no luck...sometimes it's o.k. for an hour or two but most times it's not. It also doesn't matter what the bars and stars look like in a room. The issue is not with my internet connection nor with playstation itself, like I said I get kicked to the lobby. I am wondering if it has something to do with a person's NAT type. I'm out of ideas and nobody else seems to have an answer, hopefully this well start happening to more people and get the attention of Polyphony. Right from the drop of the with this game they've dropped the ball for the online networking end of this game.

Considering everything the servers are asked to do, I don't see it getting better anytime soon. Hopefully the stability will improve, though.

I love GT5 but the extent that the PD defenders on this site go to ignore or reflect criticism is disturbing. Its absurd to tell somebody who is having legitimate issues with this game to stop playing, get out, accept inferior game play without complaint, and request having the thread locked.

JT has a right to be upset and a public forum pertaining to GT5 and its issue are a good place to post his thoughts. To post a comment mocking or dismissing his issues are not helpful and only serve to bring these forums down. If you disagree with his statements, how about you write an intelligent discourse to his problems after analyzing his situation or just ignore the thread and go to a thread where you can participate positively and will have more fun.

Whatever the real cause of the games issues are, the fact is that many people are experiencing problems racing online and to ignore them or dismiss them outright is wrong. PD needs to fix the online experience so it is more fun and fulfilling to every customer that plays its game and this forum needs to work on its behavior.

That being said thanks for the positive or informational insights that have been posted. I have learned a lot of new things and probably so have many others so in the end, JT's thread has been quite informative.

There are a lot of variables and many people dont have a clue what they are doing.

Another factor is ISP. My ping changes per ISP. Not to mention speeds per site. Some ISP will traffic shape on their 'unlimited no catch broadband' but most wont even realise it. On pc games some people really do think they have the perfect O.C system with perfect connection when in reality their pc crashes all the time and they have 100ms ping rates...

So exactly how many Turn 10 employees frequent this forum? It's funny how every time there's a GT5 update coming soon, they come out in full force making up silly GT5 bashing threads. You'd think they'd have video games to program, but oh, that's right they don't have to put very much work into their games since they don't program anything even resembling real life physics, so they have plenty of time to be obsessive over everything Gran Turismo and Polyphony Digital are doing, and to launch web forum attack campaigns to just try and make GT5 look as bad as their lame game instead of actually putting in the effort to make their product even come close to the quality of the object of their obsession aka GT5.

👍 what he said :dopey:

Yeah sure. I challenge you and LarryL to some racing. Since I'm so busy as a Firestarter you two will have no problem winning as I have no time to practice. Right? That's your theory? Add me. Good luck.

Can anyone point me the in the direction of a good thread that offers suggestions on what to check for regards connection performance and also how to set up routers in general to have the best online experience.
I have what i thought to be a decent BB connection and dont often suffer from Lag but a few nights ago it was very bad and this was whilst i was racing with a regular freind.
My BB is 40 meg DL and 2 meg UL (checked on speedtest). Im not sure of my Ping but i think it is in the order of around 15-20ms local.
It is BT infinity BB (fiber optic) and i use an ASUS RT-N56U.

thanks

Nathan

This thread is a good place to start!

But this is better, maybe. I don't know in all honesty.

If you're having intermittent trouble, and it's normally OK, I'd suggest you're probably fine. Just keep an eye open for laggers in your rooms; they bring the experience down for everyone, bless 'em.

Thanks for that i will check on the ones i understand when i get home :)

My server connection always goes after about an hour, then it barely is ever able to Join a room.

Yes, lag slowing down lap times and the pulsating car issues. Free run qualify is perfect. I agree, issue with GT5 servers.

Check your ISP, they may be doing some throttling.

I have two ISP connections coming in to my house, with the 2mpbs connection i have no issues with GT5, with my 8mbps connection i encounter intermittent lag and other online issues. Some ISP prioritize web traffic when they see high bandwidth use.

How can you we blame GT5 servers if online gameplay is peer to peer with GT5 servers out of the loop?

Im sure i read somthing about GT5 getting dedicated servers on GT Planet when the prolouge ones were shut down, i may well be mistaken and that time has come and gone anyway, but this game is crying out for some real dedicated servers

The problem is not internet connections(you can check yours here www.speedtest.net ). If it was, it would be an issue with lag. We are getting disconnected from our respective rooms and sent back to the lobby. We are not getting kicked off of the "playstation network", I am not losing connection with my computer, nor do I have any issues with any other games online. It is with Polyphony, whether it has to do with a person's router and how it's set up means that it's an issue with Polyphony. They should be telling us if there are problems with NAT types conflicting, DMZ, if we should static our IP address' (which I have done) or if we have to portforward (which I have done). With all this info and not having any problems at all with GT5 online before the update I fail to see how anyone can tell me that it's MY internet connection.

I fail to see how anyone can tell me that it's MY internet connection.

Though it remains a possibility (upload and download speeds are all but irrelevant), no-one is saying that. Please re-read everything written in this thread explaining how Peer-to-Peer networks function, because this is just retreading old ground. Including the part about Speedtest and why your speeds are all but irrelevant.

Polyphony has no GT5 servers that host races. It is not an issue with "PD servers". It is the nature of P2P gaming.

Then you're gonna have to "dumb it down for me Doc." I don't have any issues with any other games online and this problem only started after the update. Before that everything worked beautifully. I realize that you're helping by telling me what the problem isn't, but what I really need, is to know what the problem is....Does P2P work differently with each game? Are they're some changes that I can make on my PS3 that well help? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Then can you explain what these Polyphony Digital Servers are for? https://www.gtplanet.net/?attachment_id=11097
Sorry Doc, I'm not trying to be smart, I'm just trying to figure out what's going on and if I can rectify my issues. If I get an issue after a year with no problems then I figure that there has to be a way to fix it.
In some of your earlier post you said that a big problem is crappy connections. I believe that may be a part of (but entirely) the problem, otherwise when things were good(not getting disconnected), jumping into a room without any bars should have crapped out on me, but never, ever did.
What's happening is a new issue for me, nothing on my end has changed except for the update from PD.

A pic with Servers in it. Nice!
Those servers could be good for almost everything. You could write a book about all possibilities, but who has the time?

Great! A smart-a$$! I could write a couple of books about all the possibilities as to why, but I don't have the time either.
