Phil Harrison will resign from his post as President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios this Friday, February 29.

Kaz Hirai, president and Group CEO of SCEI, will immediately assume responsibilities as president of Worldwide Studios, in addition to his current duties.

Prior to the launch of the original PlayStation, Phil Harrison joined Sony Electronics Publishing, Ltd. in 1992, which later evolved into Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. Since then we'd all agree that he's made a tremendous contribution to the industry as well as the company for playing a strategic role in the launch of four PlayStation platforms.

"As one of the founding members of SCE, Phil played a key role in the development and growth of the PlayStation business and our industry," said Hirai. "It is sad to see him departing from SCE, but I wish to express my gratitude for his many invaluable contributions and also wish Phil the very best of luck in his future endeavors."

Phil Harrison added, "The past 15 years at Sony Computer Entertainment has been the defining journey of my life so far. I am grateful to all the PlayStation family for its incredible support, guidance and friendship. It has been a privilege to serve as part of the team and be inspired by them on a daily basis. I am so proud of everything PlayStation has achieved and will continue to support its future in every way I can."

There's no word on what Harrison will do next. Sony UK would only say, "We will not be making any further statements." That's that then.

Although Harrison's decision has come a week after he said that Sony Japan got it very wrong about social gaming...

I'm actually kind of glad. Most of the confusing back and forth PR statements regarding the PS3 seem to come from Harrison.

Dual Shock is last gen technology

Backwards compatibility is a key for Sony/Backwards compatibility isn't that important

Just read about this..

Yeah he kind of said some stupid comments (although probably just like a slip of the tongue) but I think he did a good job at the press conferences, was kind of fun and very casual with the audience..

Im up for taking over his position! If your interested Sony..

I for one will be sorry to see him go, I always thought that Phil was a very outspoken person but also a very enthusiastic about what he was doing too, even tho; as pointed out very misleading.

Good luck Phil 👍
