If only I'd seen him race.
Seven years on, Williams pay tribute to their dream driver, Ayrton Senna. We
were a little surprised, and somewhat disappointed to see many F1 websites use
the recent San Marino GP as yet another opportunity to remind us of the tragic
events of 1994. Although the legacy of that dreadful weekend will never be
forgotten, one can't help feeling that there is a tendency to play on race fans'
emotions every year when the F1 circus arrives at Imola. The same sites don't
dwell on the death of Bandini when it comes to the Monaco GP, nor do they give
us long flowing tributes to Ronnie Peterson and Jochen Rindt when Monza comes
around, so why do they insist on re-hashing the same old 'tributes' when it
comes to Ayrton Senna. That said, one tribute to the three-times champion is
definitely worth mentioning - particularly at this time. The events of Imola
1994 were traumatic for the Williams team. What should have been a magical
partnership that could easily have seen the Brazilian claim!
two, possibly three, more titles, came to a sickening halt at Tamburello.
Although Williams claimed victory at Imola just one year later, and again in '96
and '97, the circuit will always bring back bitter memories. A dip in fortunes
in recent years saw the Grove based outfit slip in to the unfamiliar role of
support player to McLaren and Ferrari - even Jordan at one stage - however last
weekend the British team once again climbed to the top of the podium. How
fitting that the circuit that saw the death of the dream, should also witness
the re-birth, and how wonderful that Sir Frank and his team have never
forgotten. As Ralf Schumacher's car waited in parc ferme following last
weekend's race, Bothwell photographer John Marsh took a picture of his race
winning FW23. There, hidden away from prying eyes is the team's touching tribute
to the much-mourned Brazilian star, the Senna logo. The famous 'double-S' logo
has been there for some time now, but at Imola amidst the champagne !
and celebrations it seemed all the more poignant. We're sure that next year,
roundabout San Marino GP time, journalists will once again come up with Senna
tributes, however none will compare with Williams' silent, and heartfelt,
tribute. Click here to see Williams' tribute
