Photography Tournament – Interest / Registration

Hi everybody,

I am thinking of starting a Photography Tournament, much similar to the GT4 Photomode Tournament. I want to know if there are interest and participants.

Depending on the amount of interest/participants, the tournament will begin in the 15th, January, 2010.

If you want to participate, just write the following in the thread: “I’m IN for the tournament”. A P.M. will be sent to you when the tournament starts.

There is a minimum of 8 participants for this tournament and a maximum of 16. If there are a number of participants between 8 and 16, a qualifying round will be opened to decide the 8 participants that will go through the first round.

The tournament will be a knockout competition format. Each photographer will randomly match another photographer for the first round, and progress through the final round.

Each match will have its own random theme. Participants will have to fallow it.

Each round will have the deadline of 10 days, the poll will last 4 days and, in case of a tie, the tie breaker poll will last 1 day only.

The photograph you submit must be your own work and, advisably, not posted in your gallery until the poll is up.

Photographs can be edited anyway you want, as long as it’s all your own work.

Photographs must not be taken before the 1st of January, 2009.

You may watermark your photograph, as long as it doesn’t obstruct the subject of the image.

You may not submit a photograph already posted in another competition.

You may not vote for your own entry when the poll is up.

Every entry will have to be submitted to me via PRIVATE MESSAGE.

You can submit your entry either as a thumbnail or a preview linked to the full size. The preview must not be bigger than 400px in the longest side and the full size image must not be wider than 900px in the longest side.





I think this is all. If you have any question, doubt, regard or suggestion, don’t hesitate to post it. I’ll do my best to answer it and/or add any additional rule.

How is it different to the monthly photographic competitions?

Speaking personally, I'd like to see more images being displayed for the sake of displaying them, and fewer competitions. But then to me photography is art more than sport.

What would be awesome is if we had a theme each month which members can contribute too. They could throw in as many pictures as they like and receive feedback on their work, get an idea how others approach the theme. It's a vague idea on purpose but could be used to get us thinking and interacting more.

Speaking personally, I'd like to see more images being displayed for the sake of displaying them, and fewer competitions. But then to me photography is art more than sport.

I think it's different because of the way it is organized, with it being a duel between two photographers. Speaking from a person who has witnessed the GT4 competitions it is actually fairly entertaining to see how two individuals face off.

I like displaying my images for the sake of them, and I want feedback on them. But...I have a gallery for that.

I think it is possible to combine some of the elements from art and sport. In which I think seeing someone's interpretation of a theme compared to another is actually an interesting test of both skill and expression.

It will span over many objects, but it doesn’t mean it won’t have some automotive themes as well. But don’t worry, the themes aren’t too demanding. They will be quite general and open to allot of artistic interpretation.

Like I said in the first post: “The tournament will be a knockout competition format. Each photographer will randomly match another photographer for the first round, and progress through the final round.”; or in other words, you will be matched (randomly) to another photographer. If your interpretation to the theme (photograph) wins, you will make it to the next round. If your interpretation loses you will be knock out of the tournament.

Also, its worth to mention that this tournament won’t last forever, nor it will last long. Depending on the number of entrants, it can only have a maximum of 4 rounds. So, this will make a two months competition. Also, it will be a onetime only. When this tournament ends, there won’t be any in the months afterwards (maybe only in the next year, if it proves to be successful).

Well, for that we already have the GTP Monthly Competition, that I think it will have a break this month and I hope it will make a comeback quickly.

I think you may have mis-understood the concept I was putting across, there would be no competition or tournament. A theme would be suggested then members can contribute images towards that theme. In doing so they can get critique out of it, see how other members interpret the theme and share inspiration and tips on their shots. It would work on a more you put in the more you get out of it basis. Infact I think I'll start it up.
