I have no idea... I was looking at this for an hour and half last night. Theres the same amount of complete boxes being used in both pictures and i ... just have no idea where that extra box is comming from. Is there an answer to this.????

Yes there is an answer, and Talentless is on the right track. But I'm picky. I want a more detailed answer (:

Hmm.. I don't know how to better explain what Talentless said. In the first picture, the two funky shaped blocks fit together b/c you were matching up the sides that had the same number of blocks , but that wasn't done in the second picture. I'm gonna be frustrated about this until you tell us the answer.. lol.

The location of the unfilled square is where the botom right block of the red shape was, so I would guess it comes from there. Is that it? :Poke:

That space is still represented in the second configuration.

Each block still occupy the same number of squares on the grid.

I almost got my finger broken last time I was in a pillow fight. It really sucked! You know, I just realized that this may be the reason it still hurts ... from 10 years ago. Maybe it was broken! Aye caramba!

guessing by movement.

4 movements of the orange shape
2 up 2 right.

7 of the red shape
5 left 2 down.

10 of the green shape
3 right 2 up 5 right

lighter green shape does not move

or it comes from the l shaped square lowering and moving left and the red and green triangles reversing.

And you still haven't learned your lesson. Pleeeeeeeese? Just whisper the answer in my ear.. I won't tell anyone and I won't beat you with my pillow.

Well...it doesn't really come from anywhere, does it? Maybe I just don't understand the question...

Okay, try this.

It is a case of the pieces beig differently arranged. You'll note that on the bottom shape the combined shape is slightly taller at most points - the top line is not straight on the bottom combined shape, it's actually slightly convex.

The blank square represents the difference in volume of the straight top line in the top combined shape, and the slightly convex shape of the top line in the bottom combined shape.

Not terribly well explained, but I think that's it.

Yes I think you're right, coz if you look at the top corner of the red triangle in the top picture it hits exactly in the corner of one of the white blocks.

Whereas the same point on the bottom picture is slightly above there.

Again not explained well.

You ARE correct!

The hypotenus (long side) of the big shape is actually not a strait line. The red and green triangles are not the same ratio, which gives them different angles. In the first configuration they 'bulge inward', concave. On the second configuration they 'bulge outward', convex.

Congradulation, vat_man!!

Would anyone else like to give us another picture puzzle, or must I seek out the next challenge?

Cheers mate - not just a pretty face (not even that, some would argue).

That was good - if you've got anymore, put 'em up.

When I get cable....

Ugh.. my brain can't wrap itself around that. Brings back bad geometry class memories.. lol.

The big shape that they create isn't actually a triangle, it just looks like one because the long side is _almost_ strait. The top one the long side bends in a litte. The bottome one the long side bends out a little. That little difference adds up to a whole block.

If you look at the two little triangles you'll see that their shorter sides don't have the same ratio. That means when you switch them, the angled part of the long side of the whole picture moves.

I fear I'm confusing the issue. I best stop now (:

Why I laugh?

 I don't know why this struck me as being so funny, but it did. Maybe it's just too early for me to be awake and online.

I was gonna post the answer right after you posted the thread... but I figured I would watch and see how far it would go.

I have seen this picture tons of times... Drafting teachers love it.

Cool, thanks for holding off a little while (: I seem to remember doing something like this in my 7th grade Industrial Technologies class. We had a section on drafting that was so much fun.
